Carbon election office is ready

Carbon County’s election office is ready for the upcoming primary election.

On Thursday, Jennifer Ketchledge, election director, reported that the majority of the poll worker positions at precincts that had vacancies have been filled. Only one position remained opened as of last week. It was a clerk position in Lansford.

Ketchledge said if anyone is interested in serving as a poll worker should call her office at 570-325-4801.

The election board also approved the voter registration totals for the May 16 election. Since Pennsylvania is a closed primary, only the Democratic and Republican parties are eligible to vote.

The registration totals are 21,105 Republicans and 13,572 Democrats for a total of 34,677 people eligible to vote.

The board stressed that these are not the only parties registered to vote in the county, and instructed Ketchledge to compile a document outlining all parties that are registered in Carbon County, which will be posted on the county website to provide additional transparency.

Commissioner Michael Sofranko announced that voters who applied for mail-in or absentee ballots should have received them since they were mailed at the beginning of last week.

Ketchledge said that 2,208 mail-in ballots were requested.

Voters now have until 8 p.m. on Election Day to return completed ballots to the election office at 44 Susquehanna St.

She said that if a mail-in voter would like to vote at a precinct, the voter will need to bring the unopened ballot that was received to their voting precinct and sign a form to cancel the ballot they received. Voters cannot bring a completed or open ballot to the precinct on Election Day and be able to cast a vote at the polls.
