Banks enters agreement for Hazleton police services

The Banks Township Supervisors are hoping a new agreement with the city of Hazleton will help them police and clean up the township.

The supervisors approved an ordinance that establishes an agreement between the township and city whereby township officials will be able to identify abandoned autos by their license plate number or Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN.

Once the vehicles are identified, township officials will be able to cite the owner if the auto is abandoned.

“We’ve been working for this for a long time,” said Township Solicitor John Solt, who said he would notify the city the ordinance is in place.

But there will be a temporary glitch enforcing the ordinance.

Supervisor Rick Porpiglia said Mike Nagy, the township’s code enforcement officer, is going to resign the post because he is moving out of the township.

There are two non-auto issues that came up during the meeting - a pile of trash at the end of Church Street in the village of Audenried, and mattresses piled up across the street from the Junedale Playground.

Porpiglia reported he and township road workers have begun to smooth out Lincoln Circle in Junedale with asphalt millings. But the area near the intersection with the Junedale Road still has to be finished.

Tresckow resident Tony Harvilla thanked the supervisors for doing the same to Hemlock Street behind his home.

Another Tresckow resident, Tom Yesilonis, said there are “a lot of depressions” in Cherry Street.

Harvilla also said he has contacted state Rep. Doyle Heffley and Sen. David Argall about grants that may be available.
