Cat shelter hosts fundraiser in memory of volunteer

The Carbon County Friends of Animals held a fundraiser Sunday at Radical Wine, 511 Mahoning Drive East, in Lehighton, to raise funds for the shelter and to honor the legacy of a dedicated volunteer.

Rose Marek was the sister of Kim Mulik, a volunteer with CCFOA for the past 20 years.

“She was a great supporter of the shelter and helped me a lot with all the fundraisers that I do for Carbon County Friends of Animals,” Mulik pointed out.

Rose Marek enjoyed time at Radical Wine, which is why the fundraiser was being held there.

“My sister’s favorite drink was a Malibu Bay Breeze,” Mulik added. “Radical Wine is offering that drink in her honor and have it on special.”

The fundraiser included a basket auction, a 50/50 drawing, food, and drinks. Radical Wine donated $1 for each drink that was purchased to the shelter.

In addition, everyone who brought in donated items from the shelter’s wish list was entered in a door prize drawing. People brought in cases of cat food, paper towels, disinfectant spray, and more. DJ Star Tracks provided music for the event.

“My sister is going to love that we’re doing this today,” Mulik concluded. “I know she’s here with us in spirit, and loving what we’re doing.”

Carbon County Friends of Animals is the feline shelter of the area, specializing in sheltering and finding homes for cats.

They currently have about 120 cats there; however, with the kitten season is here and that number is expected to rise. The shelter normally has room for about 180 cats.

“We operate only on fundraisers and support from the public,” Mulik explained. “Sometimes we have over 200 cats. We support anyone who can come in and offer any kind of help. They can come and volunteer, or if they have any other fundraiser events ideas, we would be happy to hear it.”
