Local roundup: Results from April 5, 6 & 7

Tamaqua’s Katelynn Fredericks won a pair of events and was among six area athletes and one relay team to earn gold at the Tamaqua Invitational on Saturday,

On Sunday, the Marian girls track and field team opened the season with a sweep in Schuylkill League action.

TRACK

Tamaqua Invitational

Tamaqua’s Katelynn Fredericks posted a pair of victories at the Tamaqua Invitational on Saturday.

Fredericks won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.41 in the finals, and posted a 49.72 to win the 300 hurdles.

Lehighton’s Gabriella Brown and Marian’s Addison Fritz also placed first in the girls competition. Brown won the long jump (15-11) while Fritz won the triple jump (32-10.5). Brown placed third in the triple jump (30-11).

The Marian boys had three first-place finishers. Alex Porambo (800, 2:02.81); Albin Petschauer (3200, 10:27.29) and Jesse Rodino (discus, 128-2). Petschauer was also second in the 1600 (4:44.57).

The Tamaqua boys also placed first in the 3200 relay with a time of 8:40.08.

Lehighton was third in the girls team standings with 94 points, while Tamaqua was fourth with 88.5 points. Hazleton won the team title with 106.5 points, just ahead of Southern Columbia (106).

The Marian boys placed fifth with 62 points, just ahead of Tamaqua (61) in sixth, while Lehighton (51.5) was seventh. Nativity won the boys team title with 140.33 points ahead of Mount Carmel (123).

Jones and Hazleton’s Samuell Guzman each had a 171-8. Guzman won on judge’s decision.

Marian-Nativity

The Marian girls opened the season with a Schuylkill League sweep on Sunday.

The Fillies posted wins over Weatherly (137-2), Panther Valley (117-22) and Nativity (91-49). Aliya Tikhtova (300H), Addison Fritz (triple jump), Emma Ashfield (3200), Gabriella Osenbach (long jump) and Olivia Thomas (shot put) each had wins for the Fillies, who also swept the 400, 1600 and 3200 relays.

Mikayla Yurichek won the discus and javelin for the Panthers, while Hilary Shreffler placed first in the 100 hurdles.

Marian went 2-1 in the boys meet, with wins over Weatherly (94-38) and Panther Valley (88-46), but fell to Nativity (110-31). Michael Silliman (triple jump) and Jesse Rodino (discus) posted victories for the Colts. Brad Jones won the javelin for the Panthers.

BASEBALL

Lehighton-Catasauqua

Lehighton held off Catasauqua, 4-3, in a non-league contest Saturday.

Jayse Lawrence had two hits, and Brady O’ Donnell stole two of the team’s four bases for the Indians (5-2), who broke a two-game losing streak. O’Donnell stole home in the third inning with the winning run. He also picked up the victory, giving up two hits over the final three innings.

Asael Gonzalez and Matt Fotta each had three hits for Catasauqua (0-6), which remained winless.

(Rothermel Tournament)

A big sixth inning helped Panther Valley secure a 9-6 win over Shenandoah Valley at the Rothermel Tournament Sunday.

The Panthers (3-1) pushed across four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. Hayden Goida was 1-for-1 with three RBIs and three walks. Andrew Kokinda (run scored) and Danny Wehr also had hits and RBIs, while Chase Weaver added a hit, scored three runs and walked twice.

Tristian Karosas was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for the Blue Devils (0-4), who trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the third inning. Brayden Maksimik also had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

(Rothermel Tournament)

Minersville plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to an 8-5 victory over Marian at the Rothermel Tournament Sunday.

The Miners, who evened their record to 3-3, took advantage of seven Marian errors, and erased an 8-5 lead for the Colts. Lorenzo Yourey had two hits for the Miners.

Michael Gelatko, Lachlan Segedy, and Coy Nolasco (two RBIs) each had two hits for the Colts, who fell to 2-3.

Northampton jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for an 8-4 victory over Pleasant Valley on Friday.

Logan Higgins had two hits and Gavin Pychinka had three RBIs for Northampton (4-2).

Anthony Knight drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Stroudsburg to a 9-8 non-league victory over Palmerton Saturday.

Palmerton took an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but Stroudsburg rallied for three runs.

Knight had three hits and allowed three runs over six innings. Alex Pacitti added two hits for the Mountaineers (3-1).

Jacob Grammes had two hits and three RBIs, while Jason Carelli had two hits for Palmerton (2-5), which dropped its third straight.

East Stroudsburg South’s Liam Huffman tossed a one-hitter and notched 10 strikeouts to lead the Cavaliers to a 3-0 non-league victory over Tamaqua Saturday.

The Cavaliers (3-3) managed only two hits, but took advantage of four Blue Raider errors.

Wyatt Steigerwalt had the lone hit for Tamaqua, which suffered its first loss of the season and is now 5-1.

Carly Gaffney twirled a one-hitter to lead Palmerton to a 10-0 Colonial League win over Salisbury Friday.

Megan Matsko had two hits, including a home run, and teammates Sydney Frantz and Mikayla Pengelly also each had two hits for the Blue Bombers (4-0), who remained undefeated.

With the loss, Salisbury fell to 1-3.

Addison Chavanic had three hits, three RBIs, and also picked up the victory to lead Lehighton to a 16-4 rout of Tamaqua in Schuylkill League action Saturday.

Chavanic struck out four over 3 1/3 innings to help Lehighton pick up its first victory of the season (1-4). Morgan Myers and Brynn Mriss each added two hits for the Indians.

Tamaqua remained winless (0-4) on the season.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Pleasant Vy.-Danville

Pleasant Valley rolled to a 14-4 non-league win over Danville on Saturday to stay unbeaten.

Devon Bush scored seven goals and had an assist for the Bears (8-0). Rylee Rath (two assists) and Olivia Iandoli (one assist) each had two assists. Abygail Borger made six saves in the win.

Jera Strony scored twice for Danville.

Pleasant Valley also won the JV contest, 12-2.

BOYS LACROSSE

Pleasant Vy.-Liberty

Nate Cummings scored five goals and Liberty posted a 13-8 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley Friday.

Landon Lane scored three goals and had two assists for the Hurricanes (7-2). Ryan Cummings and Deklon Greer each had two goals and an assist, and Ronnie Heimbach made 12 saves.

With the loss, the Bears fall to (0-5).

TENNIS

Pleasant Vy.-Northampton

Pleasant Valley edged Northampton for a 4-3 win in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action Saturday.

No. 1 and 2 singles players John Hargrave and Noah Dolan came together to pick up an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles for the Bears. Roman Steuer and Chris Lanier rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles for Pleasant Valley, and Aaron Rehrig and Jess Hansen posted a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Dolan earned a win at No. 2 singles.

Northampton is 5-6 on the season.
