Men charged with stealing checks

State police at the Hazleton barracks last week arrested two men from the Bronx, New York, who they said traveled through Northeast Ohio stealing bank checks and items related to mail box phishing.

Jaime Castilla Olivera, 26, and Leandro Filion Acevedo, 27, were committed to the Luzerne County Prison, Wilkes-Barre, in lieu of $100,000 monetary bail after the incident that happened at 11:52 a.m. March 26 on Interstate 80 in Butler Township, near Hazleton.

Police said they are charged with receiving stolen property and theft of mail. One of the suspects was also found to have an active warrant out against him from the Centre County Sheriff’s Office for driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Police said they uncovered the theft after stopping a vehicle the men were occupying due to a window tint violation. During the stop, police said, indicators of criminal activity were observed which prompted police to obtain consent to search the vehicle.

They said during the search 37 stolen bank checks and items related to the mail drop were found inside the vehicle. Through the investigation, police said it was determined the men traveled through northeast Ohio on March 26 stealing from postal drop boxes
