Federal prison inmate gets 6 months for having a ‘shank’

Tyrik Brown, 29, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill, in Minersville was sentenced on March 20 by U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani to serve an additional six months in prison on the charge of possession of contraband in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

According to U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam, Brown, formerly of Washington D.C., previously pleaded guilty and admitted to possessing a dangerous prison-made weapon, commonly known as a “shank.”

The charge stems from an incident in April 2023 in which staff at FCI Schuylkill found Brown in possession of the weapon.
