Local Roundup: Results from March 18

Palmerton and Pleasant Valley posted wins in baseball action Monday, while Weatherly picked up a victory in softball play.

BASEBALL

Jim Thorpe-Palmerton

A solid pitching performance by Cameron Pengelly helped Palmerton gain a 9-2 non-league victory over Jim Thorpe.

Pengelly tossed five innings, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out five. AJ Borger hurled two scoreless frames to secure the win.

The Blue Bombers (1-1) received two hits and two RBIs from Jacob Grammes, with Pengelly adding a double and an RBI. The winners also received a hit, a run and an RBI from Jason Carrelli.

For the Olympians, who were playing their season opener, Lazorick had two hits and scored a run. Matt Domski also contributed a hit and two RBIs.

Nativity-Pleasant Valley

Royce Thompson delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Pleasant Valley to a 4-3 non-league victory over Nativity.

Trailing by a run entering the home seventh, walks to Braydon Green and Anden Bordick were followed by a sacrifice bunt that put both runners in scoring position. After an intentional walk to Dakoda Lucas loaded the bases, an error allowed Green to score the tying run.

Thompson then ended the game for the Bears (1-0) with his clutch hit.

Lucas was on base four times, with two hits and a pair of walks. He also stole two bases.

For Nativity, Nick Wagner finished with three hits.

SOFTBALL

Hamburg-Tamaqua

A huge seventh inning lifted Hamburg to a 13-2 non-league victory over Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders plated two runs in the home first and held the lead until the final frame when Hamburg scored 12 times.

The winners were led by Molly Krick, who had a single, a double, two runs and three RBIs.

Ceanna Gormley and Paige Bumbulsky both had RBI singles for Tamaqua (0-2) in the opening inning. Both players also collected a double in the contest, while Kolbe Robb added a pair of hits and a run.

Weatherly-CMVT

Weatherly outscored Columbia-Montour Vo Tech in gaining a 20-12 non-league victory.

Juliette Bartel knocked in five runs for the Wreckers, who posted six runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed.

The winners, who improved to 1-1, also received two RBIs from Kiley Holman, Rebecca Caldwell and Abigail Teodorescu.

Abigail Binder went the distance on the mound for the win.

Freedom-Pleasant Valley

Freedom remained undefeated after edging Pleasant Valley 4-3 in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference match.

The Patriots, now 4-0, swept singles action in straight sets.

The Bears (2-2) managed three wins in doubles play, as the teams of Chris Lanier/Roman Steuer, Aaron Rehrig/Jens Hansen and Logan Krock/Damon McMurtry all posted victories.

Blue Mountain-Lehighton

Lehighton’s Bayto Cokrilja managed a win at No. 1 singles, but Blue Mountain won every other match in claiming a 4-1 victory.

Cokrilja won in straight sets for the Indians, who dropped to 1-1.

The victory lifted the Eagles to 2-1.

Saucon Valley spoiled Palmerton’s season opener on its new courts, as the Panthers posted a 5-0 Colonial League victory.

Deven Pandey, Alex Moraski and Louis Flowers swept singles play for the visitors, as Saucon improved to 2-0.

The loss dropped the Blue Bombers to 0-1.
