Palmerton planning to reopen dog park Wednesday

The dog park in the West End of Palmerton is set to reopen Wednesday, the borough posted on its Facebook page on Monday.

The park has been closed since mid-January.

“Poop bags are provided as a courtesy, but there is no guarantee they will be stocked,” the post states. “Please come prepared with your own poop bags and ensure to clean up after your dog.”

Borough Manager Autumn Canfield said last month that the park at Alley J, above portions of the 800 and 900 blocks of Edgemont Avenue, was off limits.

Canfield said at that time that one of its proponents had called the borough about concerns with water running through with the rain and the snow and the frozen ground.

She said the borough was merely trying to preserve the dog park for the season so that it would stay nice for spring.

In February 2023, Lisa Snell Kern, president of Friends of the Palmerton Dog Park, told borough council the group’s vision was to hold several small events, such as Egg Hunt for dogs, along with several other holiday-themed activities at the park.

Snell Kern asked if the dog park be a subcommittee that would report to the borough’s recreation committee.

Council did not take any action on her request at that time.

Earlier that month, Councilman Andrew Hollywood asked visitors to the dog park to clean up after their pets.

Hollywood said at that time there were some concerns expressed with the dog park at the West End Recreation Association.
