Police release details of fatal crash in Lansford

State police at the Lehighton barracks released details of a one-vehicle crash Saturday morning that claimed the life of a Jim Thorpe.

Sean Maiden, 48, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at 3:12 a.m. in the emergency room of the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township, according to Carbon County Coroner Mark Smith.

Police said the 2009 Nissan Maxima was driven by James R. Carroll III, 46, of 39 W. Walter St., Summit Hill, who suffered serious injuries and was also transported to the hospital in Franklin Township by Lehighton EMS personnel.

Police said it is suspected Carroll was driving under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance. They said field sobriety tests and an interview were not conducted due to the severity of his injuries.

They said the crash happened at 1:57 a.m. on Route 209 (Patterson Street), near the intersection with Andrewsville Road. They said the Nissan was northbound when it left the lane of travel, continued off the northbound shoulder of the road and struck a tree.

After the initial impact, police said, the car continued up the shoulder and struck a guard rail before overturning and traveling back into the roadway. They said during the crash, the car spun counter-clockwise before coming to rest facing southwest in the southbound lane of Route 209.

Police said both men had to be extricated from the wreckage as the highway was shut down for more than six hours.

They said Carroll was wearing a seat belt at the time but Maiden was not wearing one. They said he suffered multiple blunt force injuries.

State police reconstruction and forensic teams arrived at the scene and processed the scene, reconstructing the crash, police said.

Police were assisted at the scene by the personnel from the Lansford Fire Company, Lehighton Ambulance, Summit Hill police, a local towing service and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
