2 student vans crash in Mahoning

Several people were transported to the hospital following a crash involving two school vans early this morning in Mahoning Township.

Township police Chief Audie Mertz said the call came in at 7:17 a.m. for a two-car crash in the 700 block of Mahoning Mountain Road.

Mertz said one of the vehicles was a Mercedes van that flipped over onto its side.

He said there were two occupants in that vehicle, both of which were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Carbon campus.

Mertz said the other vehicle was a Hazleton School District van, with the driver and four students, inside.

He said all five were transported to LVH Carbon.

Contacted this morning, Lehighton Area School District Superintendent Dr. Christina Fish said the vans were Behavioral Health Associates, and she is unaware of any Lehighton students on board.

Mertz said the road was closed during the incident, and it was cleared out a little after 8:30 a.m.

Mertz said Mahoning Valley Ambulance, Lehighton Ambulance, and Mahoning Valley Fire Department assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
