Letter to the Editor: Pleasant Valley School Board must investigate scholarship loss

To the Editor:

It’s happened again. Scholarship money is being denied to deserving Pleasant Valley students.

Last year I challenged the Pleasant Valley School Board to investigate why the $90K Singer Family C and E Foundation Scholarships were unavailable to our PV students. Nothing was done, obviously, because it has happened once more.

At last evening’s PV Board Meeting (Feb. 22), Superintendent James Konrad stated that the Foundation’s representative, Dr. Avery, has decided that PV students would not be offered the scholarships again this year. What is the possible reason? No explanation was provided.

Instead of accepting responsibility for the $90K scholarship elimination for two years, the superintendent blamed the philanthropists who have been providing monetary awards to PVSD since the scholarship’s 501(c)(3) inception in 1997.

Why won’t the board investigate this abysmal travesty, hold someone responsible and rebuild the bridges with the Foundation, to reestablish this most needed award? Since Superintendent Konrad’s tenure began, PVSD has lost $180K in scholarships from this donor who has been a loyal PV supporter for decades.

By doing nothing to resolve this problem, the PV Board of Education’s silence speaks volumes. Who is supervising this superintendent?

Thomas Jefferson noted, “Evil triumphs when good men do nothing.” The PV Board needs to take action. Kids come first, right?
