Panther Valley offering free meals this summer

The Panther Valley School District will be offering free breakfast and lunch to minors living within the district’s boundaries this summer.

The school board last week approved the district taking part in the federally funded, state-administered Summer Food Service Program for 2024.

Superintendent David McAndrew Jr. said that this is similar to what the district did during the pandemic outbreak.

The free meals will be available to anyone under the age of 18 in the district, including those enrolled in cyber school, he said.

Meals will be delivered to each community, which includes Nesquehoning, Coaldale, Lansford and Summit Hill. Sites were the meals will be available have not been determined yet, he said.

The board also acted on the following items:

• Approved the following booster clubs for 2023-24: baseball, softball, track and field, and all-night party committee.

• Approved the new baseball and cheerleader uniforms for 2024-25 at cost of $4,000 each.

• Approved spring and winter sport workers for 2023-24.

• Approved the baseball and softball fields for Districts for $500 for the 2023-24 school year.

• Approved a refund to Panther Valley Knee High Football for overpayment of $435, due to a security vendor not having staff available.

• Approved properties for tax sale, five in Nesquehoning Borough and one in Lansford. The sale of the property in Lansford was opposed by the borough, and board member Anthony DeMarco also opposed the sale.

• Hired GSL Consulting for assistance in obtaining grants. Cost are incurred within 30 days of the district being notified of an award.

• Approved the 2024-25 school calendar.

• Approved policies on security of computerized personal information; data governance; acceptable use of Internet, and records management on second reading.

• Approved the first reading on policies regarding educational opportunity for military children; graduation, eligibility of nonresident students; enrollment of students; transportation, public comment in board meetings.

• Approved the Health and Safety plan for 2023-24 with no changes. This has to be approved every six months.
