Two CCTI student groups recognized

Sue Ann Gerhard, adviser for the Carbon Career & Technical Institute’s National Technical Honor Society, updated the CCTI Joint Operating Committee Thursday evening about the accomplishments of the NTHS and introduced several students.

Joining Gerhard were Frangil Colon, the society’s president, and Jada Saldukas, society treasurer. Both students are seniors in the Cosmetology Department and are from Weatherly.

Some of the projects they completed included collecting blankets and snacks for residents of Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly. The students delivered the gifts to Heritage Hill and entertained the residents with Christmas carols.

They also partnered with SkillsUSA to collect Toys for Tots, presenting more than 250 toys to the Schuylkill/Carbon Marine Corps League. Culinary Arts was the winner of the competition by donating 100 toys.

Honor society members will be volunteering at the American Cancer Society Telethon, helping answer phones.

“These students are held to the highest of standards with regards to grades, attendance, discipline and participation,” Gerhard said. “Several areas are monitored regularly for each student, including grades, attendance, discipline, teacher evaluations for character, leadership, and service.”

Also joining Gerhard was Gracie Heintzelman, a senior and a student from Panther Valley in the Digital Marketing and Business Fundamentals Department, and the school’s news correspondent for the Times News article.

“I wanted to talk about how great an opportunity this is,” Heintzelman said. “I think it’s really great because I get to talk weekly about all the great things happening at CCTI. Basically, everything I do is to get the community involved to see what we do here and the great things our students are accomplishing. I like to do it to show that CCTI is proud of what they do.”

Each of the participating schools choose students to be their schools’ correspondents. The column appears every Saturday in the Times News. Today it is on Page 5.
