Tamaqua woman charged after fight over Super Bowl betting

Mary Bowen, 37, of Tamaqua, was sent to the Schuylkill County Prison following a Feb. 12 incident in which she assaulted a man and resisted arrest following an argument about the Super Bowl, Tamaqua police said.

According to police, officers were called to the unit block of Mauch Chunk Street at 12:36 a.m. after a man said Bowen struck him in the face.

Police spoke to the man, who was bleeding from the nose and had minor lacerations. He was taken to St. Luke’s-Miners in Coaldale for treatment.

Officer said Bowen had locked herself in a bathroom, but came out to explain that she began arguing with the man after he talked about a relative of Bowen’s who made Super Bowl bets. Officers said Bowen appeared intoxicated, and had blood on her nightgown and small lacerations on the insides of her wrists. Police said the apartment had items thrown on the floor, along with small blood spots on a bed and floor.

Bowen declined medical treatment.

When told she would be arrested for harassment and simple assault, police said she stalled and refused to get dressed. While walking Bowen out of her apartment, another tenant yelled at police for making noise.

Police said Bowen started walking toward the officer, and with concern for their safety, the officer pushed Bowen to create space between them. Police said the push caused Bowen to lose her balance and fall on the outside steps. She was taken to St. Luke’s for treatment but signed herself out.

Bowen was taken to the police station, and arraigned before Frackville Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli. She was unable to post $15,000 percentage bail and taken to prison.
