Resident proposes community garden in Tresckow

How about a community garden in Tresckow?

Resident Drew Sherkness floated the idea to the Banks Township supervisors at their meeting Monday night.

Sherkness proposed the garden be set up on an underutilized volleyball court at the Tresckow Sports Complex. There is a Little League field, a recently revived Babe Ruth field, and a basketball court, aside from the volleyball court, at the complex.

The supervisors said they had been approached a few years ago by someone who wanted to form a volleyball league, but it never materialized.

“This would be a place where people could hang out while their kids play at the playground,” Sherkness said. “It would be a family place. It would be the lowest cost, lowest liability way to use it.”

The garden would require planting soil and a water source, Sherkness said. “It would give people who don’t have a garden to plant a place to do it,” Sherkness said,

Butler Township has had a successful community garden for many years near its Little League complex.

This past summer, two teams representing Tresckow were formed and entered in the Valley Junior Babe Ruth League. Both teams play their home games at the field, which is getting new dugouts, one of which will include a concession stand. A new fence was built around the perimeter of the field.

On another matter, Sylvia Pena asked the supervisors what steps have to be taken to hold a festival for children on the Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend. She said she would carry her own insurance.

John Solt, solicitor for the township, said Pena should also include the township as an additional insured on her policies. The supervisors tabled the issue until their next meeting March 11.

Solt also said the township now owns a former auto garage along Route 309 in the village of Audenreid. The township got the .32 of an acre property at sheriff’s sale for back taxes owed.

Supervisor Charles Schalles said the township does not yet have title to the property, so the supervisors have no plans for the property yet.
