Thorpe man charged with trying to break into home

A Jim Thorpe man has been charged with attempting to break into a residence.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective Lee Marzen of the Jim Thorpe Police Department in the case against Benjamin Wnorowski:

At 12:22 a.m. Jan. 26, Jim Thorpe Police were dispatched for a man attempting to break into a residence in the 800 block of Carbon Avenue.

While en route, officer Christopher Conarty was provided additional information that the man was attempting to kick through the kitchen door, and then fled.

Upon arrival, Conarty was unable to locate the man. After speaking with the homeowners, the female homeowner said she initially saw the man walk around their cars several times.

She provided a clothing description of a man wearing a tan Carhartt style jacket, a charcoal colored hooded sweatshirt, and said that the man had brown hair.

The suspect kicked the door, causing the lower left glass pane to break. At that point, the male homeowner told the suspect he had a firearm and “You’re making a mistake,” at which time the suspect fled in an unknown direction.

The couple stated that they checked their van and several keys were found in the vehicle on the driver side. None of the keys were in the vehicle earlier in the evening, and they did not belong to the homeowners.

Conarty was unable to locate the suspect after he left the scene, so in the morning, officer Robert Carelli made contact with the suspect, Wnorowski, 33, who was walking down Hill Road toward Broadway.

Wnorowski was wearing the same clothing as described by the female homeowner.

Through the course of the investigation, the Jim Thorpe Police Department obtained video surveillance of Wnorowski, who was seen walking west of the 300 block of South Avenue at around 11:28 p.m. Jan. 25.

Wnorowski was later captured on video surveillance from the 200 block of West Broadway, where he was seen walking east toward Broadway.

Through the investigation, Marzen, along with officer John Pruitte made contact with Wnorowski at his residence. Marzen showed Wnorowski the set of keys that police had found, and asked him if the keys were his.

Wnorowski said that they were. Marzen then checked the two house keys and they opened both the front and side doors. Wnorowski was then taken into custody.

Wnorowski faces charges of criminal attempt, loitering and prowling at night time.

Wnorowski is in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 cash bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Feb. 7 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
