FDA investigating creepy notes; some found locally

A photocopied note, neatly coiled into a scroll and tied with bright yarn, hung from a low-lying branch at a remote Schuylkill County trail.

A similar note was recently found inside a sealed container of macaroni and cheese purchased at a Carbon County grocery store.

They’re just two reports of the notes, which have been showing up over the last few years in packaged goods and at state parks and forests.

They contain cryptic and puzzling messages that speak of secret societies, religion and even celebrities.

They’re written with symbols, are rife with misspellings, and as one note finder described, “look like a bunch of gibberish.”

Who’s behind the notes is a mystery, but they’ve caught the attention of state and federal agencies.

“The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) is aware of the situation,” an FDA official said.

Those who find a note can call Pennsylvania’s FDA at 877-689-8073.

“The agency evaluates product defects and other complaints that it receives,” the FDA official said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Resources is also accepting reports of those found in state parks and forests.

“We are seeing those notes and looking in to them,” said DCNR spokesman Wesley Robinson.

While the agency has received reports, Robinson said it isn’t widespread.

The FDA also advises that those who have recently purchased items that they suspect have been tampered with should not use the product and should return it to the retail outlet.
