Letter to the editor: Biden’s Electric Vehicle Grift

Editor’s note: This letter is being reprinted because some of the original information was omitted.

In August (2023), 1,609 global scientists, including two Nobel Laureates, announced in a World Climate Declaration: “There is NO climate emergency.” Astrophysicist and long range weather forecaster Piers Corbyn argues unchallenged, that man-made global warming is nonsense and that it is the sun that drives climate.

Biden’s EV mandates force automakers to ensure that 67% of all new vehicles sold are electric vehicles by 2032. Let’s compare EV’s to gas powered vehicles. On average, gas powered cars cost $34,000, batteries cost between $45 and $250, and get 403 miles per tank. On average, EV’s cost $67,000, batteries cost between $5,000 and $20,000, and get 243 miles per charge. Mid-priced gas vehicles cost less to refuel, approximately $11 to drive 100 miles compared to $13 to $16 for comparable EV’s. EV’s take from hours to days to charge, according to the DOT and cost 25% more to insure. According to AAA, cold weather can cut EV range by 12%, a loss that leaps to 41% in extreme seasonal temperatures. I was informed of a couple who purchased a new $64,000 EV. Shortly afterwards, the battery shorted out, not warranted. It cost them $27,000 for a new battery, including an $8,000 hazmat fee.

China produces three-quarters of all lithium-ion batteries with child labor and controls 85% of the world’s supply of rare earth minerals used in production. With China emitting more than double the CO2 than the US, why are we enriching them?

There are limited recharging options and our power grids are already overloaded. Used lithium-ion batteries are combustible, can leach toxic metals and are considered hazardous waste. What about the national security risk we face by giving control of our transportation to China.

117,000 US auto-manufacturing job losses nationwide are projected. With Ford’s EV division losing $4.5 billion (2023) and its CEO recommending EV’s as a secondary vehicle for short distances (not for towing), are EV’s ready for primetime? Even by DOT’s estimates, the proposed legislation would reduce average global temperatures in 2060 by 0.000%.

It appears that China is the big winner here and that’s never a good thing.
