Local roundup: Results from Jan. 24

Reese Balk delivered a walk-off pin to help the Lehighton wrestling team secure a critical win Wednesday. The Jim Thorpe wrestling team and Pleasant Valley boys basketball squad also picked up victories.

BOYS WRESTLING

Lehighton-Blue Mountain

It took Reese Balk less than a minute to lift Lehighton to a 39-36 Schuylkill League win over Blue Mountain.

With the Eagles holding onto a slim 36-33 lead over the Indians heading into the final match of the night, the 285-pound Balk dropped the Eagles’ Trevor Manbeck in 54 seconds for a pin to give the locals enough points to seal the win on the road.

Connor Dugan (121), Evan Wentz (139) and Wyatt Sherer all scored some additional bonus points for the Indians (9-3 overall; 4-0 SL), as all three recorded falls. Jacob Ferguson added a decision at 160-pounds.

The win sets up a showdown at North Schuylkill next Tuesday for the Division 1 title. Both the Indians and Spartans are unbeaten in Division 1 competition this season.

Jim Thorpe dropped Tamaqua for its first Schuylkill League win of the season with a 48-30 victory.

The Olympians (5-9 overall; 1-3 SL) scored a total of six pins, as Stephen Korte (121), Owen Acker (139), Max Pfeifer (145), Richard Kenna (152), Aiden Sterling (215) and Peter Almeida (285) all posted pins.

Jacob Hehn posted the lone pin for the Blue Raiders (2-9; 0-4) at 172 pounds.

Catasauqua escaped with a 39-33 Colonial League victory over Northwestern.

William Turner (133) and Trent Croll (139) delivered back-to-back pins in the match’s final two bouts, but it wasn’t enough for the Tigers (3-10 overall; 2-6 CL) to pull out a victory.

Luke Fugazzotto (172) and Braydon Uricchio (114) also added pins for Northwestern.

Williams Valley came out with a 36-35 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Michael Cobb’s decision at 139 pounds pulled the Panthers (2-9) within one, at 30-29 with two matches to go. However, a pin by the Vikings at 145 sealed the deal. Rory Dixon delivered a pin for the Panthers in the final match.

A quick start helped Pottsville secure a 59-43 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.

Christian Alvarez posted eight of his 17 points in the first quarter for the Tide (12-5 overall; 10-0 SL), who took a quick 25-4 lead over the Olympians (1-16; 0-10). Chase Oswald scored 11 points, with seven in the opening quarter.

Pierce Gothard tied Alvarez for the game-high for the Olympians, as Gothard netted 11 of his 17 points in the final quarter. Ben Goldberg scored 12.

Noah Porter led the way for the Bulldogs (13-2; 6-2), as he poured in a game-high 26 points. Layne Yoder followed with 21.

Niko Saldukas led four Wreckers (2-13 overall; 1-7 SL) in double figures with a team-high 17 points, while Ian McKeegan used his perimeter shot to score 16 on the strength of four three-pointers. Corbin Wagner and Austyn Lamonica both finished with 12.

Pine Grove defeated Weatherly, 35-20.

Hollynn Sampson and Lainey Fidler each finished with eight points for the Cardinals.

The Wreckers’ Maci Kane was the lone player to hit double figures, as she netted a game-high 10 points. Katie Knock chipped in with eight.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Pine Grove picked up a 30-17 win over Tamaqua.

Kaylee Seltzer scored 10 points for the Cardinals. Hollynn Sampson added eight.

Millie Black scored 10 points for the Blue Raiders.

Sch. Haven-Tamaqua

Tamaqua picked up a 33-20 win over Schuylkill Haven.

Millie Black had 15 points for the Blue Raiders. Nico Conahan added nine.
