Lansford office remains closed

The Lansford Borough Office remains closed three weeks after its secretary walked out during council’s reorganization meeting.

Borough council did not reappoint Wendy Butrie, who served as borough secretary/treasurer, at its Jan. 3 meeting.

The borough has not had a secretary since Butrie left.

Council hired Paula Fisher of Lake Hauto as a part-time secretary during its regular meeting Jan. 10, and hoped to restore office hours shortly after that hire.

Fisher has since decided against taking the job “due to the actions of a member of council,” Council President Bruce Markovich said this week.

He did not elaborate on the matter, but noted that the same “councilman” has been trying to keep former secretary, Shantel Lauer, who resigned to take another position in December, from working weekends on an as-needed basis.

Council hired Lauer as a part-time borough secretary at a special meeting on Jan. 16.

Markovich expects council to start interviews for a secretary next week. The borough has been advertising the position of borough secretary/treasurer and assistant borough secretary.

Markovich had said previously that bills, payroll and other financial matters were being handled by Lacey Gonzalez. Council retained the services of her business, LGH Tax and Accounting, this year.

Residents were encouraged to use the drop-box outside the office to remit payments.
