Fillies clinch Schuylkill D-3 title

The Marian girls’ took care of one goal and continued to motor towards more.

The Fillies clinched another Schuylkill League Division 3 title on Monday with a 58-46 victory over Schuylkill Haven in a showdown between a pair of one-loss teams.

In addition to the title-clinching win, the Fillies’ Carly Minchhoff hit an individual milestone when the superb four-year starter became the 22nd player in Marian girls basketball history to score her 1,000th-career point.

Despite the personal accomplishment, the focal point for Minchhoff was the team accomplishment in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score indicates.

“It was nice to get it,” Minchhoff said about the milestone. “But I’m more concerned about the team and about winning.”

Despite being a major contender in the the league’s Division 2 race, Haven (15-2, 7-2) just couldn’t handle Marian’s relentless pressure.

From the get go the Fillies (16-1, 9-0) were revving up the engine, forcing the visitors into 12 first-quarter turnovers, while storming out to an impressive 17-8 lead.

Marian then took total control by blasting away for 10-straight points to start the second quarter and open up a commanding 27-8 advantage.

The Fillies’ pressure was daunting, something coach Damian Fritz preaches from start to finish.

“That’s our style,” he said. “We want to throw as many defenses at the other team, this way they can’t get too comfortable thinking how to attack us.”

Defense also turns into offense as Marian zipped up the court at will at times, enabling Addy “Juice” Fritz to pour in a game-high 22 points. She had plenty of help as Minchhoff followed with 14, while Aliyah Tikhtova and the “Roadrunner” Deanna Pugh both added six points.

“We can spread our offense around,” said Fritz. “It’s not just one or two individuals that we have to rely on.”

Moments before halftime would commence, Minchhoff took center stage.

The 5-10 senior buried her 1,000th point with 2:57 to play in the second quarter as she drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to bring the house down as students and teammates swarmed halfcourt.

“I had the thousand points hanging over my head,” Minchhoff said. “I knew I was only eight points away going in, but it was hard to get into a groove.”

Marian took a 33-15 lead into the lockers at halftime and thereafter it was just an easy glide to the finish line.

Fritz hit a pair of shots to open the scoring in the third quarter and then got a terrific assist from Pugh before sinking a pair of fouls to help drive her team to a commanding 47-25 lead after three quarters.

Marian stretched its lead to 56-32 with 3:23 to go before a 14-2 Haven run to close things out made the final score look a little more respectable.

“They’re going to be a team to reckon with,” coach Fritz said about the ‘Canes, who start four underclassmen. “Coach (Tony) Sanders has the team pointed in the right direction. They’ll be a good team to watch moving forward.”

So too will Marian. With one goal down and league, district and state goals still ahead, the Fillies - who have now won 16 straight - show no signs of slowing down.

OFF THE GLASS … Both teams were nearly equal with Marian getting the edge 38-32. Fritz had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Fillies and Tikhtova added seven.

SHORTHANDED ... Marian star Frankie Martinelli, who is battling an injury, didn’t play last night and has missed five of the last six Fillie games.

OFF THE PINES … The Fillies continue to get steady play from reserves Olivia Thomas and Gianna Corrado. That duo is helping to develop depth.
