Thrift store open

The Kunkletown Thrift Store at the Eldred Community Center reopened today. The hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Food donations are encouraged. They are then given to the West End Food Pantry.

First mission meal

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will be hosting the first Mission Meal of the year at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The Community Sunday Supper is set for 3 p.m. Sunday and the Senior luncheon for 1 p.m. Monday after the 12:10 p.m. Mass.

WE Seniors menu

The Chestnuthill Senior Center is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.

The menu choices for Friday are stuffed shells or garden salad.

The choices for next Wednesday are Swedish meatball or dilled turkey.

For meal reservations one should call the center manager Donna Riedel at 570-242-6770 by 10 a.m., one day in advance.

There is a suggested donation of $1.50.

The center and the other 4 Monroe Centers will be closed Jan. 15.

On Friday, Behavioral Nurse Rachel Wydra will lead an interactive discussion “to help one feel one’s best during this season’s shorter days and longer nights at 10:30 a.m.”

KVFC volunteers

The Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company administrative officers for 2024 include: President-Ray Miller; Vice President-Lou Salerno; Secretary-Larry Kahn; Financial Secretary, Brian Stankovich; Treasurer, Terry VanBuskirk; and Directors-Tom Aruta and Chuck Hayes. Brian Stankovich 28-7 is Chief; Assistant Chief is Lou Salerno 28-8; 2nd Assistant Chief is Ray Miller 28-8-1; Captain is Tom Aruta 28-9; Lieutenant is Chuck Hayes-28-9-1; and Cheryl Frable 28-S-1 is the Safety Officer.

Saturday breakfast

A donation-only breakfast will be served by McMichaels UMC from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

A complete breakfast will be available. Everyone is welcome.

Classes resume

Religious classes canceled for Jan. 7 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will resume Jan. 21.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Senior Food Box

The eligibility for the Senior Box Program is for a household size of one with an annual income of $18,954 or less, and other size families for stated allowable incomes and provides many foods for older adults.

Breakfast served

Effort UMC will hold its monthly breakfast from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

All donations will help support the Capital Improvement Fund for the church.

Ross Twp. museum

The Ross Township Historical Society’s museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and every second Saturday of each month thereafter at the same time. There is no charge for admission and all are welcome to view photographs, artifacts and items specific to historical Ross Township. The museum is located at 258 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg.

Night at the Races

Night at the Races at Our Lady Queen of Peace, which was postponed from last week will be held this Saturday. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Jesus Day held

On Jan. 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in McCawley Hall, Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will celebrate Jesus Day.

Among the components: work with wood in Joseph’s carpenter’s shop; make bread and butter in Mary’s kitchen; try writing in Hebrew; visit the pottery shop to make something out of clay; and much more, including tasting foods that Jesus probably ate as a child.

Prayer chain

McMichaels UMC has an ongoing Prayer Chain and invites anyone who is in need of prayer or knows someone who needs prayer, to email Ruth Funk at ruthandnick@yahoo.com detailing the need. The church has a group of people dedicated to praying for anyone who needs prayer.

Soup sale

Effort UMC’s soup sale for January offers New England clam chowder and beef barley.

Orders will be taken through next Wednesday, with a pickup date of Sunday. Sign-up forms are on the church’s Welcome Center.

Church event reset

In light of the weather this past weekend, the Family & Youth event at Salem-St. Paul’s was rescheduled for Jan. 28.

Pizza sale held

McMichaels UMC is holding a pizza sale. Call Martha at 570-992-6742 with an order on or before Saturday. The 12-inch pizzas are with cheese only and are reasonably priced. They can be picked up at the church by 11 a.m., Jan. 20.

Stromboli orders

Effort UMC is accepting orders for its handmade strombolis. Available will be broccoli & cheese, pepperoni & cheese, and cheese steak. Prices remain the same as last year.

Orders and payments are due by Jan. 29.

Call Pastor Ken or Jan Decker for additional information. Pick up will be on Feb. 11.

Fun Science set

Registration is due by Feb. 1 for a Fun Science Saturday with Mad Science taking place from 9 a.m. to noon, Feb. 17, at Chestnuthill.

Participants are invited to spend the morning learning about the science of magic, movie effects, and toys.

During the Science of Magic, learn the science behind illusions, read minds, and perform a Houdini-style escape.

In Movie Effects, discover why science is the real star on the big screen. Create cool sound effects. Toy with 3-D technology. Make motion pictures come alive. Sketch a short feature in the Cartoon Creator flipbook.

During Science of Toys, learn what makes toys work. Take a spin with kinetic tops. Balance a bird to reveal its center of gravity.
