Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 4

Tamaqua’s swim teams swept Schuylkill Haven on Thursday, while the boys basketball team rolled past Pine Grove.

Other winners included the Northern Lehigh and Northwestern girls basketball teams.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua-Schuylkill Haven

Tamaqua gained a Schuylkill League sweep of Schuylkill Haven.

Jathan Krall and Stephen Behun both won two individual events to help the Blue Raiders boys gain a 112-35 victory.

Krall captured the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Behun took the 50 and 100 freestyle races.

In the girls meet, Lexi Buchala and Savannah Wilson each had multiple firsts as the Tamaqua girls posted a 101-65 win.

Buchala touched first in the 200 and 500 free, while Wilson copped the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Three players scored in double figures as Tamaqua rolled to a 61-39 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.

Noah Mateyak poured in a game-high 19 points for the Blue Raiders, who used a 20-4 fourth quarter to turn a close game into a decisive win.

Cooper Ansbach contributed 16 points, while Luke Kane added 10.

The Cardinals received a team-high 13 points from Owen Hannevig.

Tamaqua improved to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the league. Pine Grove dropped to 0-11 and 0-5.

Jim Thorpe-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain remained undefeated with a dominating 71-16 victory over Jim Thorpe.

Twelve players scored for the Eagles, who allowed just three points in the first half and led by 31 points at the break.

Issac Thomas paced the winners with 12 points, while Tyeirre Meade added 10.

The Olympians were led by Aaron Curran’s six points.

Blue Mountain is now 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the league, while Thorpe slipped to 1-11 and 0-5.

Lehighton-North Schuylkill

Lehighton led at the half, but North Schuylkill rallied for a 58-52 Schuylkill League victory.

Joe Roth scored a game-high 19 points for the Indians, who held a three-point advantage at the break. Lehighton, now 8-4 overall and 1-4 in the league, also received 10 points from Cole Dietz.

The Spartans (8-3; 4-1) were led by Zane Zulkowski’s 17 points. Joey Flail added 13 points for the winners, who outscored the Tribe 29-20 over the final two frames.

Northwestern-Saucon Vy.

A big fourth quarter allowed Saucon Valley to gain a 54-46 Colonial League comeback win over Northwestern.

Jack Robertson scored eight of his 14 points in the final frame as the Panthers erased a six-point deficit with a 19-5 period.

Adam Clark also finished with 14 points for Saucon, now 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the league.

The Tigers (6-4; 4-2) were led by Gavin Nelson’s game-high 16 points, while Ethan Kozlowski chipped in with 10.

Weatherly-Nativity

Nativity jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 66-44 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Trey Keating and Blake Adams both scored 12 points in the opening half as the Green Wave built a 19-point halftime advantage.

Keating finished with a game-high 23 points as Nativity upped its record to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Niko Saldukas poured in a team-high 17 points for the Wreckers, now 1-8 and 0-4, while Ian McKeegan added 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Salisbury-Northern Lehigh

Northern Lehigh posted its second straight blowout in as many nights as the Bulldogs rolled to a 68-19 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

Katelyn Barthold scored 12 of her 20 points in the opening quarter as Nolehi raced to a 25-point lead.

The Bulldogs, who registered a 54-point win the day before, received a game-high 21 points from Aubrey Pollard and 14 from Dekota Barthold.

Desiree Nales tallied a team-high 13 points for the Falcons.

Northern Lehigh, which has won four of its last five games, is now 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the league. Salisbury fell to 2-7 and 0-6.

Saucon Vy.-Northwestern

Northwestern won its eighth straight game with a decisive 58-14 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Cara Thomas scored all 10 of her points in the first two quarters as the Tigers jumped out to a 36-11 halftime lead.

Emme Freeman led a balanced Northwestern attack with 12 points, while Brook Balliet added 11. The winners also received 10 points from Olivia Reinhart.

For the Panthers, Marin Bowers tallied a team-high five points.

The Tigers are now 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the league. Saucon slipped to 2-8 and 1-6.
