Sofranko elected commissioners chair
Newcomer Michael Sofranko will lead the Carbon County Commissioners in 2024.
During the county’s annual reorganization meeting, the three-member board voted unanimously to name Sofranko as chairman and longtime chairman Wayne Nothstein as the vice chairman. Commissioner Rocky Ahner serves as the final member.
Sofranko thanked his colleagues for the opportunity even though this is his first term as a commissioner. He was previously the Jim Thorpe mayor.
He also thanked Nothstein for his years of service serving in the chairman position and noted that he was looking forward to working with both Nothstein and Ahner.
In addition to setting the chair and vice chair positions, attorney Robert Frycklund was reappointed as county solicitor; while Eloise Ahner was reappointed to serve as the chief clerk/county administrator.
One new item that the commissioners adopted was a new rule of orders.
Until now, the county followed Robert’s Rule of Orders for meetings; but Frycklund recommended changing to the Modern Rules of Order.
He explained that these rules are more practical guidelines for the procedures of meetings.
The request passed unanimously, changing which rules of orders are followed, however the county must still conduct business according to county code.
The commissioners then approved their meeting schedule for weekly meetings, as well as prison board, election board, salary board and retirement board.
Commissioners’ meetings will be held at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday, beginning Jan. 11. Meetings will not be held on July 4, Aug. 8 and Thanksgiving.
Salary board meetings are held the first Thursday of each month, beginning in February, during the weekly commissioners’ meeting.
Election board is held the second Thursday of each month after the commissioners’ meeting with the exception of Aug. 8.
Retirement board is held the third Thursday of each month after the commissioners’ meeting.
Prison board is held at 1:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday each month in the commissioners’ conference room 1, third floor, Carbon County Administration Building.
The next commissioners meeting is Jan. 11.
