The Northwestern boys basketball team and the Tamaqua girls team picked up wins yesterday, while wrestlers from Lehighton, Panther Valley and Jim Thorpe advanced to today’s semifinals of the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL

So. Lehigh-Northwestern

Gavin Nelson scored a game-high 23 points and was one of four Tigers in double figures to lead Northwestern to a 76-45 rout of Southern Lehigh.

Shane Marth added 17 points. Mason Bollinger scored 15 and Ethan Kozlowski 11 for the Tigers (5-2).

Joseph Plessl had 12 points and Hansen Fan chipped in with 10 for Southern Lehigh (2-4).

Schuylkill Haven-Tamaqua

Despite 27 points from Connor Dillon, Tamaqua’s rally fell a bit short as Schuylkill Haven escaped with a 67-62 victory on the road.

Noah Mateyak had 18 points for the Blue Raiders, who dropped to 5-4 overall on the season.

Travis Richie led the way for the Hurricanes (8-1) with 18 points, while Carl and Jake Jenan contributed 15 and 14, respectively.

Palmerton-Central Catholic

Lucas Mushrush scored a game-high 23 points to help Allentown Central Catholic open its holiday tournament with a convincing 63-35 victory over Palmerton.

Jahrel Vigo added 13 for the Vikings, who raised their record to 7-3 overall.

Brayden Hosier had 16 points for Palmerton (6-2), which snapped its six-game winning streak.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Nativity-Tamaqua

Tamaqua won its fifth straight game with a 50-9 drubbing of Nativity BVM in Schuylkill League action.

Lauren Ligenza led the Blue Raiders (8-1) with a game-high 13 points, and Makayla Bartenope added 11. Ligenza also has seven rebounds, while Kolbe Robb dished out five assists.

Reagan Bennett had four points for Nativity (0-6).

Palmerton-PM West

In the opening round of the Pocono Mountain West Holiday Tournament, it was the hosts who advanced by handing visiting Palmerton its first loss of the season with a hard-fought 53-44 victory.

Anai’sah Malone sparked the Panthers (5-5 overall) with a game-high 23 points.

Teammates Alyssa Ford and Sehaaila Jones chipped in with 17 and 11, respectively.

Sydney Frantz paced the Bombers (8-1) with a team-high 15 points, while Hannah Barry followed with 14.

Schuylkill Haven remained undefeated on the season thanks to running away with a 61-37 victory over visiting Panther Valley.

Kailee Feger paced a trio of Hurricanes (8-0 overall) in double figures with 16 points, while McKenna Runkle and Alea Porter added 14 and 10, respectively.

Maddison Maynard netted a team-high for the Panthers (6-4) with 13 points.

Teammates Morgan Orsulak and Mikayla Yuricheck chipped in with 12 and 11, respectively.

Christmas Tournament

Wallenpaupack leads the way in the team standings after day one, while Lehighton, Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua all remain in the hunt.

The Indians currently sit in seventh place in the team standings, while the Olympians and Blue Raiders follow in 11th and 18th, respectively. Panther Valley is in 24th place in a field of 26 teams.

Lehighton’s Aidan Gruber (114), Blake Muffley (133), Jacob Ferguson (160) and Reese Balk (285) all advanced to the winner’s bracket semifinals, while Panther Valley’s Rory Dixon (152) and Brian Welser (285) followed suite as well.

Stephen Korte is the lone Jim Thorpe grappler still in it in the winner’s bracket.

SWIMMING

Marian-Sch.Haven

Marian took part in a Schuylkill League meet in Schuylkill Haven. The hosts scored a 75-56 win over the visiting Fillies on the girls’ side.

Zoe Katona (200 Free, 100 Breaststroke) and Lydia Strucko (200IM, 500 Free) posted multiple first-place finishes for the Fillies.

Michael Strucko touched the wall first in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Colts.

Teammate Reece Steibler added a single first-place finish in the 200 freestyle.

No score was provided for the boys’ meet.
