West Penn convenience store seeks liquor license

A convenience store in West Penn Township wants to join its contemporaries in the sale of beer and wine.

Township supervisors Monday morning approved a request for the intermunicipal transfer of a liquor license from Alanna’s, 313 New Castle St., Minersville, to Fegley’s Mini Mart, Inc., 551 West Penn Pike, Tamaqua.

Township solicitor Paul J. Datte noted that the board would have to hold a public hearing to take public comment, at which point the board agreed to do so at its bimonthly meeting at 10 a.m. Jan. 15.

Outgoing Supervisor Tim Houser said he was not in favor when Fegley’s Mini Mart originally applied because he noted some people who purchase are probably drinking and driving, and then discarding it onto the streets.

However, Houser said his thought process eventually changed.

“I think the selling of six-packs helps prevent littering on roads,” Houser said. “These individual six-pack sales, I’m not in agreement with.”

In other matters, supervisors on Monday announced:

• The board’s reorganization meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Jan. 2.

• The township’s Board of Auditor’s meeting will be held Jan. 3.
