Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 12

Panther Valley, Tamaqua and Marian all recorded wins in girls basketball action on Tuesday.

The Panthers defeated Pine Grove, and the Blue Raiders topped Pottsville in Schuylkill League action, while the Fillies downed Executive Education in a non-league contest.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Panther Valley-Pine Grove

Maddison Maynard and Morgan Orsulak both recorded double-doubles to lift Panther Valley to a 57-40 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.

Maynard scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Orsulak collected 18 points and 11 boards.

Orsulak netted 12 of her points in the opening half as PV gained a four-point halftime lead. Maynard helped the Panthers pull away in the second half, tallying 16 points over the final two quarters.

The winners, who also received seven points from Kaidence Krapf, improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Callee Leffler topped the Cardinals (2-2; 1-1) with 13 points.

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Lauren Ligenza posted her third straight double-double as Tamaqua gained a 50-44 Schuylkill League win over Pottsville.

Ligenza scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to help the Blue Raiders improve to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Kendle Miller added 12 points for Tamaqua, which built an 18-point lead after three quarters before holding off a late Crimson Tide rally. The winners also received 11 points from Lorelei Plasha.

Pottsville (1-4; 0-2) was led by Jo Barnhart’s 14 points.

Executive Ed.-Marian

Marian hit eight three-pointers to help earn a 56-35 non-league win over Executive Education.

Addy Fritz accounted for four of the treys and ended the contest with a game-high 19 points.

The Fillies, who only led by four points at the break before pulling away in the second half, also received 14 points from Deanna Pugh. Both Frankie Martinelli and Carly Minchhoff chipped in with eight.

The victory upped Marian’s record to 4-1, while the Raptors dropped to 2-2.

Mahanoy Area-Weatherly

Ella Connolly scored a game-high 16 points as Mahanoy Area gained its first win of the season by defeating Weatherly, 52-33, in Schuylkill League action.

Olivia Kennedy tallied seven of her 13 points in the opening half as the Golden Bears (1-3; 1-1) jumped out to a 13-point lead at the break.

The Wreckers, who fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the league, received 10 points apiece from both Bethany Houser and Kelly Reiner.

Pleasant Valley-Liberty

Liberty rolled to a 65-19 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

The loss dropped the Bears to 2-4.

Marian-Mahanoy Area

The Marian boys and Mahanoy Area girls both gained wins in swimming action.

The Colts posted a 37-9 victory, while the Fillies dropped a 66-44 decision.

Reece Steibler (200 free, 100 free) and Andrew Metters (50 free, 100 back) both gained a pair of individual wins and took part on the winning 200 free relay to lead the Marian boys.

Zoe Katona (200 free, 100 breast) registered two firsts for Marian in the girls competition.

WRESTLING

Jim Thorpe

at Beast of the East

Jim Thorpe’s wrestling team placed fifth out of 16 teams over the weekend at the Beast of the East Tournament in North Carolina.

The Olympians had four wrestlers finish in third place. They included Stephen Korte (120 pounds), Max Pfeifer (150), Richard Kenna (157) and Cael Heaney (165).

Thorpe’s Jake Chamides (106) and Marcus Muffley (285) both placed fifth.
