Railroad exhibit closes in Tamaqua

Today is the last day to see the Lehigh & New England Railroad exhibit at the Tamaqua Historical Society’s Dudley Exhibit Hall.

It includes original artifacts, memorabilia, models of Lehigh & New England trains, and more than 150 photos.

The exhibit will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. at the hall next to the West Broad Street museum.

“Locally, the Lehigh & New England Railroad was an important part of the railroad history of the Tamaqua, Arlington, Panther Valley, West Penn Township and Lehigh Gap areas since the line was extended into these areas and the coal fields in 1911, after being purchased by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company,” according to Dale Freudenberger, president of the Tamaqua Historical Society.

The Lehigh & New England ceased operations in 1961.

The exhibit includes items from the collections of Freudenberger, Craig Weaver, Bill Dale, John Shucavage and Kermit Geary Jr.

“We would like to thank Bill Dale and Jim Eisenhart for helping staff the exhibit and for sharing their knowledge with visitors. Thank you to Scott Herring for printing photos from his collection and the Tamaqua Museum Collection for part of the exhibit. We greatly appreciate everyone’s help in putting together this exhibit on the L & NE,” Freudenberger said.
