2-3 inches of rain possible
Lots of rain and strong winds could make for an unpleasant feel on Saturday.
Our region is tracking a potential rainstorm over the next day or so, said Alex DaSilva, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.
DaSilva said it could gain the name Ophelia, as it already meets the wind gust requirement to be an official tropical storm.
“Winds have to be at least 39 mph for a tropical storm, it’s already above that; now we’re just essentially waiting for it to close off, and then it would get the name Ophelia,” DaSilva said.
As for our region, DaSilva said whatever comes of the storm is going to bring heavy rain late tonight and into early Saturday morning.
“Just kind of a wet, nasty day across Eastern PA tomorrow, with periods of heavy rain, maybe rumble or thunder,” he said.
DaSilva said the forecast for Saturday and Sunday calls for between 1 and 2 inches of rain for our area, but could be very close to the 2 to 4 inch line. He said he wouldn’t be surprised if we received 3 inches of rain.
“I would say Saturday is the more rainy day, probably the day you’ll see the most rain,” he said. “The better chance of seeing any kind of flooding would probably be on Saturday, maybe even Saturday night as well.”
As for wind from the storm, DaSilva said the strongest winds will be Saturday and Saturday night, joined up with the heaviest downpours.
DaSilva said the stronger winds are expected to be out toward the Jersey Shore, New Jersey, which could see gusts anywhere from 25 to 35 mph.
For our region, DaSilva said Saturday’s high is expected to reach 60, with winds out of the northeast of 10 to 20 miles per hour. The low temp is expected to be 53.
Sunday looks to be cloudy and drizzly, possibly with some pockets of heavy downpours, he said, with highs up to 61, and the low 55.
DaSilva said this system, as it kind of moves up through the Mid-Atlantic region over the weekend, is expected to slow down.
That might bring another kind of rainy day on Monday as well, at least for the morning hours, he said, as temps warm up to 69.
