As of next month, West Penn Township’s impound lot will be closed.
Supervisors voted unanimously at Monday morning’s meeting to shut it down effective Oct. 1.
Supervisor Tony Prudenti suggested the township take such action, and explained why.
“It has caused us nothing but heartache and sorrow,” Prudenti said. “I really don’t think it’s worth it.”
Prudenti then suggested that the township close the impound lot, but not get rid of it.
Supervisors noted that the board’s decision to close the impound lot doesn’t mean the township is no longer going to impound vehicles.
In September 2019, the board established a new fee schedule for impounded vehicles.
The impound lot opened behind the township police station in August 2019.
In August 2018, supervisors agreed to build a 102-foot-deep, 96-foot-long, impound lot with the capacity to hold between 30-40 vehicles.
The township used about $10,000 from the police department’s budget to build the lot.
