Irene Sebelin-Serignese graduated from East Mauch Chunk High School in 1953 and was an accomplished gymnast.

In 1951, Sebelin-Serignese petitioned the PIAA and District 11 to compete in the exhibitionist category at the annual District 11 gymnastics meet.

At that time, women were ineligible to compete in the competition, but her petition was granted, and she became the first woman to perform on the parallel bars and flying rings as an exhibitionist in the annual district meet.

The Jim Thorpe Hall of Fame Class of 2023 banquet will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Jim Thorpe High School, and is open to the public.
