Man charged with false reports of child abuse

A Palmerton man has been charged with sending false reports of child abuse by impersonating his ex-wife.

State police at Lehighton charged Walter Haas Jr. after they were called to a home on Walnut Drive in Towamensing Township on Feb. 8 for a report of issues with a phone and email.

A woman told police that she had received a call from Carbon County Children and Youth about her emails to Children and Youth.

The woman said that she did not send any emails to Children and Youth.

State police contacted Children and Youth and spoke with a caseworker who said that a couple of days before the victim’s emails, he received email complaints/reports from Haas, and that after the victim began sending email complaints/reports to Carbon County Children and Youth.

The youth caseworker said that both emails had similar formats and believes Haas was impersonating the victim as the email stated that it was the victim.

On Feb. 22, the youth caseworker forwarded the emails to police, which showed three different email addresses were used to send emails to Children and Youth.

On March 6, police interviewed Haas, who said he did not have access to one of the email accounts.

Police submitted a search warrant to Yahoo.com and a “recovery phone” number was listed that matched Haas phone number.

Haas then admitted he set up the account.

When asked why he made the account, Haas Jr said that he had not seen his daughter since Nov. 26, and that the victim is dating his co-worker who has been giving her information for her PFA.

Haas Jr said that he is trying to see his daughter by reaching out to the victim but she does not want to share custody.

Haas Jr said that there is not custody order, but that the victim just refuses to share her child with him.

Carbon County Children and Youth caseworker said the agency continue charges for false reports.

Haas faces charges of identity theft, false reports of child abuse, and obstructing administrative law/other government function.

Haas is free in lieu of $1,000 unsecured bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Aug. 9 before District Judge William J. Kissner of Palmerton.
