Entertainment around the area

on Cleary and the sounds of New Orleans lead the roster of entertainment options at area venues over the next two weeks.

Cleary, with The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, will play Mauch Chunk Opera House. The latter venue will also host comedian Vic DiBitetto and an Elton John tribute act.

At the movies, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fan Event will include the franchise’s two early-1990s films. The theater’s seventh Schlock-o-Rama, meanwhile, will include 1950s-era horror and sci-fi films.

It’s a Barbie world over at Becky’s Drive-In, which will mark the release of the new “Barbie” film with a live Barbie and other Barbie-related attractions.

• Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, 7:30 p.m. July 27. Born in Kent, England, Cleary pays homage to the sounds of New Orleans, where he resides. The pianist, who has played in touring bands of Bonnie Raitt and others, includes genres such as R&B and funk in his music, plus Afro-Caribbean and -Cuban rhythms. Cleary, who released his debut album in 1994, released his first album with The Absolute Monster Gentlemen in 2002.

• Vic DiBitetto, 8 p.m. July 28. The comedian, born in Brooklyn, New York, started his stand-up career in 1981. Known for his numerous YouTube videos, DiBitetto appeared in the 2015 film “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” and the Amazon Prime series “Gravesend.”

• Bennie and the Jets, 8 p.m. July 29. Greg Ransom, playing piano since age 10, leads the Elton John tribute act. The group, named after John’s 1974 single, formed in the mid-1990s.

• The John Fogerty Tribute Project, 7 p.m. July 22. The band, formerly Willy & The Poor Boys, performs the music of Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Born in Brooklyn, New York, bandleader Al Madlinger previously played in pop and classic rock bands.

• Brent White Quintet, 7 p.m. July 28. Hailing from Philadelphia, White serves as an assistant teaching professor of music at Drexel University. A trombonist and composer, White explores the musical world of Francis Johnson on his latest album “code-switching.”

• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fan Event, 6 p.m. July 22. The theater will screen 1990s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and 1991 sequel “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze.” The event will include a DJ and themed eats. Showtime at sundown.

• Schlock-o-Rama VII, July 28-30. Exhumed Films and the theater will screen horror and sci-fi films such as 1953’s “It Came From Outer Space” and 1962’s “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.“ The event will include a DJ and cosplay. Gates open at 6 p.m. Showtime at sundown.

• Cornhole Tournament, July 22. Coal Cracker Cornhole will present the event. Early Bird Blind Draw registration begins at 10 a.m., with main-tournament registration at 11 a.m.

• Watermelon Weekend, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 29 and 30. The event will feature watermelon-oriented food and drinks, plus kids activities and a watermelon eating contest.

• Live Barbie & More Fun, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 21 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 22. The event, celebrating the release of the “Barbie” film, will include a real-life Barbie, a Barbie and Ken parade, a basket raffle drawing and photos in a life-size Barbie box. In addition, the event will feature Barbie-related concessions, Barbie/Becky’s Drive-In T-shirts and the chance to get pink hair extensions and pink-polished nails. Becky’s encourages Barbie and Ken attire. The movie will be shown at 9 p.m.

• Counting Crows, 7:30 p.m. July 21. Formed in 1991 in San Francisco, the rock band features frontman Adam Duritz. Counting Crows, with seven studio albums to its credit, scored radio hits such as “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here” and “A Long December.” Dashboard Confessional, formed in 1999 in Boca Raton, Florida, will also perform.

• Theo Von, 7 and 10 p.m. July 22. Born in Covington, Louisiana, Von hosts the “This Past Weekend” podcast. The comedian/actor, who appeared in various 2000s MTV reality series, starred in comedy specials such as 2016’s “No Offense” and 2021’s “Regular People.”

• Andrew Schulz, 7 and 9:45 p.m. July 28. Born in New York City, Schulz started performing stand-up in the early 2000s. Schulz’s specials include 2017’s “4:4:1” and 2020s “Schulz Saves America.” The actor, co-host of podcasts “The Brilliant Idiots” and “Flagrant,” appeared in recent films such as “White Men Can’t Jump” and “You People.”

• Donny Osmond, 8 p.m. July 29. Born in Ogden, Utah, Osmond scored 1970s-and-beyond solo hits, plus hits with sister Marie and his brothers. The singer/actor, winner of “Dancing with the Stars” in late 2009, released his most recent album, “Start Again,” in 2021.

• Country Jukebox, 7:30 p.m. July 28. The Pocono Pops! Symphony Orchestra will perform country hits stretching from the 1950s to modern times.
