Lansford passes oversized vehicles ordinance

Lansford Borough Council adopted an oversized vehicle ordinance last week, prohibiting large vehicles, such as tractor-trailers and tractor cabs from parking on borough streets.

The ordinance came about after numerous tractor-trailer drivers began detaching their trailers, and parking the tractors near their homes, causing unsafe conditions, Councilman Bill Chuma said.

The ordinance takes aim at all oversized vehicles, including motor homes, trailers and trucks. Oversized parking is designed at the Sports Zoo lot at 425 W. Dock St. between April 1 and Nov. 30, and the parking lot at the Lansford pool between Dec. 1 and March 31.

Chuma said he spoke to police about removing two vehicles from the Dock Street lot, and noted that people will need a permit to park on that property. Council set the permit fee at $100 last month.

Police will enforce the ordinance, and violators can face fines between $75 and $300 a day.

Other business

In other business, council:

• Approved paying an umbrella insurance policy for the borough’s buildings, equipment and vehicles with Seltzer Insurance in full for the year at a cost of $81,000. The borough had been paying in installments with an interest fee.

• Approved allowing George Krajnak Jr. to power wash the Miners’ Monument in Kennedy Park.

• Approved appraising a portion of the Silberline property from the red gate to the border with the fire company property. The borough plans to offer the land for public sale. Resident Ryan Eidle expressed interest in the land for a self-storage business.

• Ratified the appointment of attorney Robert Frycklund to represent the Lansford Borough Zoning Hearing Board on the appeal of George Haleem and Michael Klaips for the former St. Michael’s school and church.
