Man charged in death of infant Police say boyfriend admitted shaking 4-month-old baby

A Slatington man was sent to jail on third-degree murder charges stemming from the death of a 4-month-old infant.

George C. Sutch, 56, was taken into custody Thursday without incident, according to a news release from the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.

Slatington police responded to a 911 call on Feb. 11 for an unresponsive infant at a North Seventh Street apartment.

Officers found that the boy, identified as L.A., was not breathing. He was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest and pronounced dead there on Feb. 13.

District Attorney detectives said the baby had “severe head trauma” and an investigation revealed that Sutch caused the injuries by shaking him violently.

Detectives said Sutch was the boyfriend of the baby’s mother and was the last person who had contact with the baby before the 911 call was made.

During an interview on June 21, Sutch admitted that he became frustrated with the baby’s mother. He said that he fed and burped the baby, but began shaking him when he would not stop crying.

According to the criminal complaint, Sutch acknowledged that the baby stopped breathing after he shook him. Sutch said that he then left the room.

An autopsy determined the infant’s cause of death was head injuries and his death was ruled a homicide by the Lehigh County Coroner.

Sutch was arraigned before Slatington Magisterial Judge Tom Creighton. He was denied bail because of the severity of the charge, and is being held at the Lehigh County Prison.

The case was investigated by Lehigh County detectives Gregg Dietz and Andy Millen.
