Turnpike crashes

State police at the Pocono barracks released information on the following crashes on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike:

• Nicholas J. Nelms, 41, of Williamsport, was uninjured when a car he was driving struck a bear at 5:49 p.m. June 15 at mile marker 79.9 in Franklin Township.

Police said he was driving a 2021 Subaru Forester southbound when the bear entered the right lane of travel and he was unable to stop his vehicle. Police did not say whether or not the bear was killed.

The car sustained disabling damages and was towed from the scene, police said.

• A crash happened at 5:52 p.m. June 12 at mile marker 72.7 in East Penn Township.

Police said Michael Grabko, 62, of Wilkes-Barre, was driving a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 northbound when he lost control of the vehicle due to pouring rain and standing water in the roadway. The truck traveled across both lanes and hit a guard rail on the right side of the roadway, then spun around and came to final rest facing south off the right side of the road.

It sustained disabling damages to its passenger side and its trailer.

Police said he was not injured but was transported to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township, by Lehighton Ambulance Association.

He was cited for failure to drive at a safe speed.

• Another crash took place at 5:57 p.m. June 12 at mile marker 81.9 in Penn Forest Township.

Police said Manuel Aristy Castillo, 22, of Allentown, was driving a 2007 Honda when he lost control of the vehicle. It left roadway and struck a guide rail. The car was towed from the scene.

• A crash occurred at 8:17 p.m. June 12 at mile marker 81.3 in Penn Forest Township.

Police said Zhonghe Zhad, 21, of Allentown, was driving a 2015 Toyota Prius. He lost control of the vehicle, which traveled off the roadway and struck a guide rail with its front end. The car then turned clockwise and its back end struck the guide rail. It was towed from the scene.

• A crash happened at 4:20 p.m. June 14 at mile marker 93.7 in Kidder Township.

Police said Corey R. Latshaw, 24, of Lehighton, was driving a 2018 Ford Escape that sideswiped a 2008 Buick Lacrosse driven by Scott E. Gavin, 59, of Constable, New York.

The Escape was towed from the scene. Latshaw was cited for the incident.
