Three Dog Night part of busy music scene in the area

Three Dog Night, with its arsenal of pop/rock hits, leads the entertainment pack headed to local and regional venues over the next couple of weeks.

The group, set to play Penn’s Peak, scored 21 top 40 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart from 1969 to 1975. Mauch Chunk Opera House will host 1960s hitmaker The Lovin Spoonful, plus tributes to The Who and The Doors.

In the retro-film world, screenwriter Carl Gottlieb (“Jaws,” “The Jerk”) will appear at The Mahoning Drive-In Theater. The latter will also hold, among other events, the four-night “Godzilla Palooza Raids Again.”

• Three Dog Night, 8 p.m. June 23. Formed in Los Angeles, the band - featuring, among others, founder Danny Hutton - released its first album in 1968. Three Dog Night’s biggest hit singles include “Mama Told Me (Not To Come),” “Joy to the World” and “Shambala.” Fourteen of the act’s studio albums have sold 500,000-plus copies domestically.

• Martin Barre: “A Brief History of Tull,” 8 p.m. June 24. Barre, Jethro Tull’s lead guitarist for 40-plus years, will perform music from various Tull albums. The progressive rock band, formed in England, released 21 studio albums from 1969 to 2003.

• Summer Deck Parties. The schedule for the shows, which start at 6:30 p.m., is as follows: June 29, Hunkajunk; June 30, Who Knows Band; and July 1, Becky & the Beasts.

• Who’s Next, 8 p.m. June 24. The tribute band, which plays the music of The Who, performed with the late Who bassist John Entwistle.

• The Lovin’ Spoonful, 7:30 p.m. June 29. Formed in 1965 in New York City, the pop/rock band features, among others, founding member Steve Boone. The Lovin Spoonful, which released the last of its five studio albums in 1968, scored hit singles such as “Do You Believe in Magic,” “Daydream” and “Summer in the City.”

• Peace Frog, 8 p.m. June 30 and July 1. Hailing from Venice Beach, California, the band pays tribute to Jim Morrison and The Doors.

• Screenwriter Spotlight: Carl Gottlieb, June 23. The theater will screen Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster “Jaws” and Carl Reiner’s 1979 comedy “The Jerk,” the latter starring Steve Martin. Actor/comedian Carl Gottlieb, who co-penned the screenplay for both films, will appear. VIP entry at 4 p.m.; general gates open at 6 p.m. Showtime at sundown.

• “Cannonball Run: Sea-to-Shining-Sea,” 6 p.m. June 24. The theater will screen two Hal Needham films, both starring Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise, among others: 1981’s “The Cannonball Run” and 1984’s “Cannonball Run II.” For this event, the theater has invited former Cannonball racers and their cars to celebrate the double feature.

• “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School” and Vinyl/Punk Rock Market, 3 p.m. June 25. The theater will screen Allan Arkush’s 1979 musical comedy “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School,” starring P.J. Soles as a Ramones fanatic and delinquent battling a strict principal. The event will also include a record market and a Ramones cover band.

• “Godzilla Palooza Raids Again,” June 29 to July 2. Exhumed Films and the theater will presents four nights of Godzilla-universe films. The lineup includes, among others, 1973’s “Godzilla Vs. Megalon,” 1963’s “King Kong Vs. Godzilla” and 1968‘s “Destroy All Monsters.” Gates open at 6 pm. Showtime at sundown.

• Michael Lives Forever: A Tribute to Michael Jackson, 8 p.m. June 29. Rodrigo Teaser started imitating Jackson at age 9, competing on Brazilian TV shows. In 2005, Jackson’s website highlighted him as a top imitator. Following Jackson’s 2009 passing, Teaser created a tribute show, with input from longtime Jackson choreographer LaVelle Smith Jr.

• Bill Burr, 8 p.m. July 6. Born in Massachusetts, the comedian has numerous stand-up specials to his credit. Burr’s TV and film appearances include AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” In 2022, Burr - host of “Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast” since 2007 - became the first comedian to perform at Boston’s Fenway Park.
