DEP declares Code Red day because of smoke

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has declared today a Code Red Air Quality Action Day across Pennsylvania.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is contributing to high levels of fine particulate matter in the air, DEP noted.

Code Red means the air pollution concentrations across the region are unhealthy for the general population – not just those with underlying health conditions.

The smoke is coming from wild fires in Quebec, Canade. A good portion of the United States is affected.

The declaration was upgraded from a Code Orange that was issued Tuesday for today.
