Man jailed, charged in assault of woman

Thomas Gaul Jr., 58, Tamaqua, was jailed after he assaulted a woman and then resisted arrest on May 29, Tamaqua police said.

According to police, officers were called to a Railroad Street apartment at 8:15 a.m. for a domestic incident.

Police found the woman outside, bleeding from her face. Inside, officers struggled with Gaul as they attempted to handcuff him. During the struggle, police said Gaul injured his elbow but refused medical treatment after being taken into custody.

The woman said she told Gaul she was leaving him and wanted to retrieve her car and keys. Gaul threw the keys at her face then tried to push her down a steep flight of approximately 30 steps, police said.

Gaul was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Platchko on charges of resisting arrest, simple assault and harassment and committed to the Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $25,000 straight cash bail.
