2 homes severely damaged by fire in Tresckow

Two homes suffered severe damages during a fire that broke out Thursday afternoon in Tresckow.

Bob Leshko, fire chief, McAdoo Fire Company Inc., said the department received a call at 1:35 p.m. that said the addresses were 6 & 8 East Hemlock St., but they were sent to 5 E. Market St. at the Tresckow Post Office, as those two homes were immediately behind the post office.

“We had heavy fire to the rear of both of those homes, and actually extending into the backyard of one and burning the fence going to the backyard due to the amount of radiant heat,” Leshko said. “I saw the call on the smoke and requested an immediate second alarm because I was getting multiple reports from both Schuylkill and Carbon saying there were anywhere from two to four homes on fire.”

Leshko said no one was injured.

All the residents got out of the homes safely.

“There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters, which in that heat yesterday was totally amazing,” Leshko said.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to knock down the fire.

“The outside fire, we were able to darken down fairly quickly, but in two of the homes there, it had started to get into a loft that was in their third floors. The fire had no further extension through,” he said. “We had some extensive overhaul due to the plaster and lathe construction of those homes until we were able to find all of the hot spots of the fire and make sure there was no extension.”

Leshko said the first apparatus cleared out around 3:45 or 4 p.m., but added he was on scene with a state police fire marshal, and it wasn’t until about 5:55 until the investigation was done.

He said the fire has been ruled accidental.

Leshko said four buildings were affected. Besides the two hit by fire, two were damaged by the radiant heat. The siding of one home to the immediate front of that had all of its siding on the back of its home melted, and a garage next door had its siding melted. A wooden fence that separated the yard was burned.

“There was some severe damage to the two homes on Hemlock Street that had fire damage because of us having to pull some ceilings, and water damage, power having to be cut due to the fire extending into the homes,” he said. “They’re uninhabitable right now; further determination will be up to their insurance companies.”

Leshko said also assisting at the scene, with apologies to anyone who may have missed, were the Beaver Meadows Fire Department, Weatherly Fire Department, Mahanoy City Fire Department, Hometown Fire Department, Tamaqua Fire Department, Walker Township Fire Department, Coaldale Fire Department, Sheppton-Oneida Fire Department, Nuremberg-Weston Fire Department, Lehigh & Lausanne Fire Company, a tanker from Shenandoah Fire Department and a tanker from Girardville Fire Department, Delano Fire Department stood by in McAdoo, Nesquehoning Fire Department was on standby, and Lehigh Valley EMS assisted.

“It seemed like there was a lot of fire apparatus there with the type of fire, but with the heat and manpower needed, and the physical work needed for overhaul, rotating guys, being able to keep guys hydrated, that was the main concern for myself,” he said. “I will say the people at Lehigh Valley EMS and L & L did a great job making sure the guys were hydrated, had some shade, all that stuff.

“All the firefighters did a great job under the extreme circumstances yesterday. I can’t commend them enough for what they did.”
