Memorial Day services

The following Memorial Day services will be held:

Diocese of Allentown: Bishop Alfred Schlert will celebrate Mass at Resurrection Cemetery, 547 N. Krocks Road, Allentown, 10 a.m. today. Catholic War Veterans Post 454 and the Knights of Columbus will be in attendance.

Jim Thorpe American Legion Post 304: World War I Monument, Jim Thorpe, 9 a.m.; World War II Monument, 9:15 a.m.; Lost @ Sea, Route 903 Bridge, 9:30 a.m.; Soldiers & Sailors Monument, Hazard Square, 9:45 a.m.; Vietnam War Monument, West Broadway, 10 a.m.; Korean War Monument, Diligent Fire Co., 10:30 a.m.; Civil War Monument, Liberties Hill Road, 10:45 a.m.

All sites will have a wreath laying, prayer and taps.

Lansford: The Lansford American Legion Post 123 Memorial Day Services for Monday, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Veterans monument in Kennedy Park. The Lansford Legion will also place flags on veterans graves in the Summit Hill cemeteries before Memorial Day. Anyone whose graves that might have been accidentally missed should contact the Lansford American Legion. The Legion requests all residents to display the American flag on Memorial Day, and try to attend the services in Kennedy Park.

Lehighton United Veterans Organization: 9 a.m., military honors Lehighton UVO at Parryville Cemetery; 9:15 a.m. military honors at Bunker Hill/Jewish Cemetery, East Weissport; 9:30 a.m., service at Long Run Cemetery, Franklin Township, student speaker Anna Howland; 10:30 a.m. St. Paul’s Church Cemetery (Big Creek), Franklin Township, student speaker Rebecca Dishong; 11:15 a.m. military honors at Franklin Heights Memorial Park, East Weissport; 11:45 a.m. service at St. Matthew’s Church Cemetery, North Weissport, prayers, American Legion Post #314 Chaplain, student speaker Adam Sebelin. In the event of rain, the service will be held in St. Matthew’s Church, North Weissport.

9 a.m. military honors, Benjamin Franklin Monument and WWI Veterans Monument, Weissport Park; 9:15 a.m. Union Hill Cemetery, speaker will be U.S. Navy CMDR (RET) Neil Stubits; 10 a.m. wreath tossing from Weissport Bridge to honor those veterans buried/lost at sea.

8:45 a.m. World War II Memorial at Lehighton Veterans Memorial Park (bypass); 8:55 a.m. Col. Jacob Weiss Monument (lower park); 9:15 a.m. St. Luke’s Gnaden Huetten Campus, World War II Veterans Monument;

9:30 a.m. military honors SS. Peter & Paul RC Church Cemetery; 9:45 a.m. military honors Vietnam Veterans Monument/PFC Clyde Houser; 10 a.m. military honors Firemen’s Monument at Lehighton upper park.

• Lehighton Group A & B: 10:30 a.m. Main Memorial Day Service, speaker will be CPT Jason Hadley, 131st Transportation Co.; 11:30 a.m.: Procession to Lehighton Cemetery, military honors with flag raising, conclusion of services at Post 314.

Nesquehoning: The Nesquehoning UVO will hold a Memorial Day Parade at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. The parade starts by Kovatch/McDonald’s on the west side of town and travels down Catawissa Street, ending at the VFW Post on East Center Street. A program will be held at the post immediately following the parade. On Sunday, the VFW will hold its Outlying Cemeteries Event which is a mobile tribute at the various monuments and memorials around town plus the Knauf site on the Broad Mountain. Members of the VFW will leave the post at noon on Sunday to travel to various cemeteries.

Summit Hill: Palmerton: Palmerton Memorial Day Parade, 10 a.m. Monday, May 29.

Slatington: American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 of Slatington, 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 29.

Tamaqua: Walnutport: R.W. Fritzinger VFW Post 7215 and Auxiliary, Walnutport, to host Day of Remembrance, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 28, Veterans Memorial Monument.

Monroe County

Chestnuthill Township Park: Boy Scout Troop 101 will host a flag ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday.

Eldred Township Veterans Commission Memorial Day program at the municipal complex in Kunkletown at 11 a.m. Monday. Bring your own lawn chairs. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors.

The township office will be closed in observance of the holiday.

Gilbert: The American Legion Post 927 will have a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. State Sen. Rosemary Brown is slated to speak. Lisa Kaye from the county veterans office will be in attendance.

Polk Township: Remembrance of the Withdrawal from Vietnam ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the event. Guests are asked to be prompt and bring lawn chairs.

A light lunch will follow the ceremony.
