Turnpike crashes
State police at Pocono barracks released information on crashes on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike:
• Several people had crashes resulting from hitting deer.
Anthony Kowalick, 47, of Sugarloaf, escaped injuries when a car he was driving struck a deer at 2 p.m. May 9 at mile marker 72.4 in East Penn Township.
Police said Kowalick’s 2022 Nissan Altima struck and killed the deer after it jumped the center barrier into its path.
Sarah S. Wilson, 67, of Centerville, Texas, escaped injuries when a car she was driving struck a deer at 11:18 p.m. May 21 at mile marker 70.5 in Washington Township. Wilson was driving a 2018 Nissan Rogue.
Two more crashes involving deer occurred on May 18. The first one happened at 12:07 a.m. at mile marker 72.2 in East Penn Township. Police said Stephen M. Benscoter, 37, of Newark, Delaware, was driving a 2021 Toyota Rav4 southbound when the deer jumped into the roadway and struck the driver’s side and front of the vehicle. Benscoter was not injured.
Police said the Rav4 was towed from the scene.
The second crash happened at 8:35 p.m. at mile marker 84.2 in Penn Forest Township. Police said Joseph E. Byczek, 32, of Coplay, was driving a 2022 Subaru southbound and was unable to avoid striking a deer that had entered his path. He was uninjured.
• Kevin A. Charan, 30, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was uninjured after a vehicle he was operating struck an opossum. Police said he was driving a 2015 Volkswagen southbound at 12:26 a.m. May 14 when the opossum entered its path at mile marker 81.3 in Penn Forest Township.
Police said the car had disabling damages and was towed from the scene.
• Two vehicles sustained damages in a mishap at 5:45 a.m. May 19. No one was injured.
Police said it happened at mile marker 70.5 in Washington Township.
They said a vehicle traveling south merged from the right lane of travel into the left lane and struck a 2017 Dodge Ram driven by Jon R. Roth Jr., 52, of Kunkletown.
The Dodge sustained minor damages police said. They did not identify the other driver or vehicle.
• Amanda L. Ramirez, 34, of Philadelphia, sustained suspected minor injuries in a two-vehicle mishap at 5:56 p.m. April 14 on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
It happened at mile marker 65.9 in Washington Township.
Police said she was driving a 2008 Ford Explorer that was struck in the rear by a 2021 Tesla driven by Saroj Humagain, 35, of Furlong, who was uninjured in the mishap. Police said the Explorer struck a guide rail before coming to rest.
Police said Humagain was cited for failure to drive at a safe speed and Ramierz was cited for not carrying a license and exhibiting it on demand.
