American Legion holding Memorial Day services
The American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 of Slatington has announced the schedule for Memorial Day services.
The main service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Union Cemetery in Slatington. In the event of rain, it would be held at Slatington Baptist Church in Slatington.
Dennis Ziegler, past commander of Allen O. Delke Post 16, who is in his 24th year as president of the Slatington Memorial Day and Veterans Day committees, urged residents to attend.
“Support your veterans,” Ziegler said. “They paid the final price.”
Rural services will begin Sunday. Ziegler said they will visit various cemeteries starting Sunday and into Monday morning, and that they put about 2,600 flags down.
There will be not be a parade this year because of traffic safety concerns, Ziegler said. They should plan to meet at the cemetery between 10-10:30 a.m.
The main speaker will be Lieutenant Col. Kevin W. Dellicker, U.S. Air Force.
The Northern Lehigh High School Band, under the direction of band director David Carroll, will perform. Others who will be on hand are Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, the Rev. Michelle G. Fund from Heidelberg Union Church, borough Mayor Jeralyn Walters Schoch, and Legion Commander Ron Humanick, who will introduce the main speaker.
Ziegler said the Legion is always in search of new members.
He said they must have served in any branch of military service, or any conflict or war.
Ziegler said anyone interested in being a member may sign up at the Legion, or call the legion at 610-767-4142.
