Trinity, Zion to host 150th anniversary ceremonies

Two Lehighton churches will conduct joint proclamations, and then a “Faith Walk” in honor of their sesquicentennial celebrations.

Trinity Lutheran Church, along with Zion United Church of Christ, will hold the activity at 6 p.m. Saturday to commemorate their 150th anniversaries.

Joint proclamations from local, county and state officials for Zion UCC and Trinity’s 150th anniversaries will be held outside at the corner of Second and Iron streets. In the event of rain, it will be held inside at Zion’s vestibule.

Ken Leffler, sesquicentennial co-chairperson, Zion United Church of Christ, will provide Zion’s American flag.

The ceremony will begin with an opening prayer by Pastor Dean Frey, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Speakers will include Lehighton Mayor Clark Ritter; Carbon County Commissioners Rocky Ahner; state Rep. Doyle Heffley; state Sen. David Argall; and constituent advocate Carol Etheridge, representing U.S. Rep. Susan Wild, followed by closing prayer by Pastor Frey.

Immediately afterward, a neighborhood “Faith Walk” will be held.

The route for the Faith Walk will see participants proceed uphill (west) on Iron Street to Fourth Street, make a right onto Fourth Street, a right onto Cedar Street, a right onto South Third Street, and a left onto Iron Street.

Frey noted that there will be those who aren’t able to take part in the walk physically, but added that “spiritually” they will be walking with them.

Afterward, guests are asked to enter Luther Hall to watch the family movie “Jonah” at 7 p.m. These events are free and all are welcome.

Frey said “the connection between churches and community has always been extremely strong.”

“The history of the churches uniting together was for the good of the community, and the good of the Gospel,” Frey said. “No matter where history takes us, our primary purpose will always be the community, and the expression of the Gospel.”

Trinity Lutheran Church will hold an anniversary festival worship with Holy Communion at 3 p.m. June 4.

The Rev. Carl Shankweiler, associate of NEPA Bishop will preside. The Rev. Nancy Moore will assist.
