Bangor rally eliminates Tigers

EASTON - “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

What a horrible saying for sports.

You always want to do a beating unto the other team, and you never want them to do a beating unto you.

The same goes for heroic comebacks. They are awesome when you do them unto others, and hideous when they are done unto you.

Northwestern knows that all too well.

In the Colonial League quarterfinals, the Tigers put together a big bottom of the seventh inning to beat Palmerton.

On Monday in the CL semifinal, Bangor did the same thing to Northwestern, scoring three times in its final at-bat to pull out a 7-6 victory.

Of the 13 runs scored, only four were earned as the teams combined for nine errors.

In the end, it was an error that slammed the door on the Tigers as a hit off the bat of Greg Campbell was going to tie the game, but when the ball was misplayed in the outfield, the third - and winning run - scored.

The inning opened with back-to-back walks, before an infield single by Max Siu to load the bases. Campbell came to the plate, having struck out twice and walking once against starter Chase Moyer.

This time, facing Wes George, he lined a two-run single to left and when the ball skipped away from the Tigers’ outfielder, Siu was waved home with the game-winning run.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow. We didn’t execute to the best of our abilities throughout the game,” said Tiger head coach Chad Cooperman. “With that said, we stood in a great position to come out with a victory, and we just could not get it done in the seventh.”

But Northwestern (14-8) did not lose the game solely on one play in the seventh. The Tiger committed five errors, and allowed three unearned runs.

They also missed several good scoring opportunities.

In all, the Tigers stranded 10 baserunners - six of them in scoring position.

Northwestern had taken a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from Freeman, but Bangor tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a single through the middle that scored Dylan Keith, who had walked to lead off the inning, advanced on a groundball and went to third on a wild pitch.

Bangor added two unearned runs in the third, only to see the Tigers get two unearned runs in their half of the fourth. Josh Farber reached on a two-base error, and Moyer walked to put two runners on with no outs.

An error by Bangor third baseman Kurt Snyder allowed Farber to score, and Eisenhard delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Moyer and make it 3-3.

Leading off the fifth, Lichman sent a shot over the right field fence that bounced onto William Penn Highway.

It was Lichman’s second long home run in as many games, and gave Northwestern a 4-3 lead. Another Bangor error in the inning allowed Farber to score, and Eli Zimmerman drove in a run with an infield single to make it 6-3.

Bangor (19-2) got one run back in the fifth, and George set the Slaters down in order in the sixth before the seventh inning heroics for Bangor sent it to the Colonial League finals.

UP NEXT ... Top-seeded Bangor will play third seed Saucon Valley Thursday night at DeSales University for the league championship.

THEM AGAIN? ... Northwestern will be off until the district playoffs, and will probably be the fifth seed in Class 3A. Its likely opponent will be Palmerton, who the Tigers have already played three times this season. “We need to regroup and come back fighting in districts,” said Cooperman. “We can take some confidence that we gained today and take that into districts and give it our best shot.”
