Local roundup: Results from May 10 & 11

The Panther Valley softball team recorded a dramatic come-from-behind win against Jim Thorpe on Thursday.

Elsewhere, the Tamaqua baseball and Northwestern boys lacrosse team also picked up wins.

SOFTBALL

Jim Thorpe-Panther Valley

Morgan O’Brien’s hit scored Mikayla Yuricheck for the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap Panther Valley’s 15-14 walk-off win over Jim Thorpe.

O’Brien’s RBI-single capped the Panthers’ (8-12 overall) rally from an 11-0 deficit. Yuricheck led the way with two singles, a triple, four runs scored and five RBIs. In the sixth inning, the Panthers’ shortstop connected for a three-run home run to help PV chip away at the deficit.

It was O’Brien’s fourth hit of the day that capped the comeback. The Panthers’ third baseman finished with two singles, a double, triple, home run, a run scored and three RBIs.

The Olympians (2-18) capitalized on four errors and three walks to build a quick 9-0 lead after the first inning. Tara McLean had the big bat for the Olympians, as the centerfielder recorded two doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs.

Oleska McAndrew finished with two singles, two walks and four runs scored.

BASEBALL

Nativity-Tamaqua

Noah Matayek turned in a solid pitching performance to help Tamaqua record a 7-1 non-league win over visiting Nativity BVM.

Matayek tossed six-and-a-third solid innings on the mound, striking out 10, walking three while allowing just one unearned run to record the victory.

Luke Kane and Lucas Kamant both posted RBI-singles in the four-run fifth inning, while both Lucas Milot – who reached on an error – and Cian McLaughlin – who singled – scored on passed balls to help the winners take a 6-1 lead.

Kamant led the Blue Raiders (9-8 overall) with two singles and three RBIs. Kane added two singles, a run scored and an RBI.

Trey Keating had a double for the Hilltoppers (5-12).

BOYS LACROSSE

Northwestern-Moravian Academy

Austin Sosnovik’s four goals and three assists highlighted Northwestern’s 9-6 victory over Moravian Academy.

Blaine Snyder added three goals and an assist for the Tigers (11-6 overall), while Devon Hildebrand added two goals. Cade Christopher and Stone Sosnovik also both added assists.

Bailen Smargiassi made 17 saves in the win.

Chris Fanning led the Lions, who slip to 6-8 on the season, with two goals.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Saucon Vy.-Northwestern

Alexis Vennera scored five goals - including the 100th of her career - as Northwestern edged Saucon Valley, 11-10, on Wednesday.

Sydney Wright added three goals for the Tigers (10-6), while Ava Collins added two goals and an assist.
