Walters breaks CL triple jump record

WHITEHALL - The announcement rang out across Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex, drawing attention to another incredible accomplishment in Nataly Walters’ young career.

The Palmerton sophomore is no stranger to the record books.

Walters added another Wednesday at the Colonial League Track and Field Championships.

Not only did Walters win the triple jump for the second year in a row, but she did it with a league meet record leap of 39-8.

As a freshman, Walters won the event with a jump of 37-8 3/4, breaking the school record of 37-2 1/4 set by Casey Ord in 2008.

Wednesday marked another milestone, one that was not lost on the talented sophomore.

“To get the record, I was so surprised, because it was my first jump that I got it on,” said Walters. “Usually my first jump, it’s good, but not the best. And to get that mark, I was super happy. I didn’t know what to do. I looked over, my mom was crying, it made me tear up.

“But it’s a confidence booster now going into districts next week. I’m going to look for that high mark again, because I know I can do it.”

Walters finished the two-day event with four medals. After earning silver in the long jump on Tuesday, she also placed third in both the 100 and 200 finals on Wednesday.

Northwestern’s Sadie Fenstermaker also stood atop the podium Wednesday, winning the Colonial League shot put with a personal best throw.

After an undefeated regular season, the Palmerton’s boys also won the league meet title with 121 points to top Palisades (105).

Record breaker

Walters has been on a tear throughout the spring, setting school records and recording area bests on a regular basis.

She was the top seed in the triple jump with a mark of 38-10, and delivered another stellar performance to claim gold.

Among other things, Walters has worked on her runway speed, approaching her jumps like she’s starting a sprint.

“You want to get as powerful as you possibly can,” said Walters. “I think that’s been a huge help so much in my jumps to get that extra speed.

“The next thing I worked on is speed control. Now I have that speed, but I have to control it and use it to move me forward and not overly high. In long jump, I have to get up, but triple jump I want to get out.”

Walters owns the area best in the long jump at 19-1 1/2, and also in the triple jump with her previous best mark of 38-10.

She was seventh in the Class 2A long jump at states a year ago.

Regardless of the event, Walters is able to process what she needs to do a rapid pace.

“Triple jump, on a good day, it’s just natural, it flows,” said Walters. “But on a bad day with triple jump, you can really feel what you did wrong. So with long jump, you could jump and think it’s a great jump but then your number doesn’t show it. But triple jump, I cam land in the sand and be like, ‘I know what I did, I know what I can do better, I know what I did wrong.’

“So that jump, I landed in the sand, and I knew it was going to be a big mark, but not that big. So that was just like an ‘A-ha!’ moment again.”

Walters started her day with a third place in the 100 with a time of 12.60, while teammate Erin Gombert placed fourth with a time of 12.96.

She collected her fourth medal of the event with a third place in the 200 with a time of 26.08.

Her mark in the triple jump broke the previous record of 37-10 3/4 set by Salisbury’s Lindsay Bauer in 2016.

Golden Tiger

Fenstermaker won the shot put with a 36-9, topping her previous PR and breaking her own area best of 35-0.

“I am so so excited that I got that,” said Fenstermaker. “It’s absolutely crazy to me how I did that. I kind of saw it coming, with the way practices have been going. We practiced earlier this week and I was throwing well. And I thought, ‘I’m just going to come in with a clear mind, stay relaxed,’ because that’s what keeps me throwing good, and I just exploded really well at the end and finished off and threw 36 (feet), which I didn’t think I was going to do when I started.”

Fenstermaker got her best throw on her fifth of the competition. She was between 34 and 36 feet throughout the competition, and led following her first throw.

“It’s crazy to hear this, but when you have a really good throw, it kind of doesn’t feel like you’re throwing at all,” she said. “Because everything comes together, and you just have the nice flick at the end and it just comes together and you don’t feel like anything honestly.”

Fenstermaker, a junior, was the top seed in the event.

She credited throwing coach Mike Kistler for helping her progress, and keeping her level-headed through the highs and lows of the season.

“My coach has been so supportive. He’s helped me through every step of the way, even when I was having down times, he brought me back up,” said Fenstermaker. “His saying, ‘One throw at a time,’ has really made me mentally very strong. Even if I have a bad throw, I have two more left, and that’s all I have to think about.”

Fenstermaker was second in the discus on Tuesday.

“I was confident because I was seeded first (in the shot put), and throwing two days ago, I was doing very well at practice,” said Fenstermaker. “And I just wanted to carry that over, keep a positive mindset, stay calm, relax and go for it.”

Stellar season

The Palmerton boys team punctuated an 11-0 regular season with a strong showing across the two-day event to claim the league meet title.

“Our boys really performed, I’m really proud of them,” said Blue Bombers’ head coach Mike Gombert. “We’ve been a terrific team all season, they worked hard together, and I think it really paid off, obviously today.

“Of course we had a terrific regular season, so this kind of validates what we did throughout the year.”

Palmerton once again showcased the depth that made the program so strong this season. On Wednesday, the Blue Bombers had eight individual top four finishes.

Bryson Walters, the team’s only individual champion over the two days, placed third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.50, an event that featured four Palmerton athletes in the finals.

“That’s really nice as a coach to see four of your athletes out there in one event in the finals,” said Gombert.

Stephen Jones placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 44-2 1/4 for the Blue Bombers, a mark that topped his previous area best of 43-6.

Owen Hibell placed third (4:31.43) in the 1600, while Connor Hibell (4:35.61) was fourth. Owen Hibell was also fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:02.72.

Zack Anthony was third in the shot put with a mark of 46-5, while Jackson Stein finished fourth in the pole vault (11-3), and Dylan Hartranft placed fourth in the 400 with a time of 52.04.

On the podium

Northwestern’s Faith Yost collected her third individual medal of the two-day competition with a second-place in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.95. Northern Lehigh’a Evelina Mayak was third with a time of 16.42.

Yost also anchored the 400 relay team along with Bailey Murray, Carsyn Van Norman and Kaia Grantham that placed second with a time of 50.71.

Palmerton was fourth with a time of 51.55.

Northern Lehigh’s Caitlin Kirk, who won the discus on Tuesday, was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 31-10 1/2.

Northwestern’s Matthew Santana placed second in the 1600 with a time of 4:30.80, while teammate Samuel Bower was second in the 800 with a time of 2:01.04.

Cayden Kuhns (11-3) placed third in the pole vault for the Tigers, while Northwestern’s boys placed fourth in the 1600 relay with a time of 3:36.95, and Colin Myers was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 44-9.

Northern Lehigh’s Izaiah Ramos was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 41-9 1/4.

EPC

Pleasant Valley’s Abe Estime, Jarael Moore, Romeo Winckler and Patrick Moore were third in the 400 relay with a time of 42.96, a mark that also establishes a new area best time, which the Bears previously held.

“The goal was obviously to get first place, but we haven’t cracked 43.0 yet all season,” said Patrick Moore. “Today we did that, and we also got top three in the EPC, so there’s always something to be happy about.”

Parkland won with a time of 42.47, followed by Stroudsburg (42.76), teams the Bears will be competing with once again next week at districts.

“It helps us see where we’re at, what we can improve on, because we made a lot of tweaks,” said Estime. “And our time only got better, so now we’re just trying to finalize everything so we can get ready for districts, and possibly make it to states. Hopefully we can just keep improving.”

Nemani Moon was fourth in the 400 with a time of 59.96 for the Bears, beating her previous area best of 1:00.84.

“I’m really happy with my time,” said Moon. “All year this year I’ve been trying to get under one minute, that was my PR last year. So getting a 59.6 just now is really exciting.”

Moon credited working with Pleasant Valley distance coach Drew Davis for helping her lower her time.

“I feel like he’s been really supportive, he’s helped me a lot,” said Moon. “He’s been giving me hard workouts. The workouts are really hard, sometimes I don’t want to do them but he’s really been pushing me this whole year and just been really supportive.”

Nora Jones was fourth in the discus with a personal best throw of 97-2 for PV. It was the first league medal for the senior, who is eager to continue improving at next week’s district meet, which will also be held at Whitehall.

“I definitely feel a little more confident,” said Jones, who will play volleyball at Penn State Hazleton in the fall. “Just because PR’d today, and I could PR again next week, too.”
