Slatington man faces child porn charges

A Slatington man has been charged with multiple counts of child pornography.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Special Agent Caitlin Smith of the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General in the case against Matthew Egbert:

On Jan. 10, Smith received a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, that three sexually explicit, child pornography files were uploaded to Dropbox by Egbert, 45.

This CyberTip was generated by the Electronic Service Provider, Dropbox.com, when a user of that system uploaded videos depicting a child engaged in sexually explicit or prohibited conduct.

On Feb. 8, Smith completed a search warrant for the account content for the suspect Dropbox account, which was reviewed and approved by Lehigh County Common Pleas Judge.

At 6:13 a.m. May 2, agents from the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, local law enforcement and Pennsylvania State Police executed a search warrant on the residence in the 400 block of Second Street.

An agent knocked and announced, at which time five people came to the door, including Egbert.

Agents asked Egbert to speak with them in the basement of the residence, and Egbert was read his Miranda rights, to which he said he understood, signed them, and agreed to speak without an attorney present.

Egbert admitted to creating a Dropbox account to save storage on his other devices, and said Dropbox was shut down the day after he made it and was no longer able to sign in.

Egbert admitted to liking girls aging from 14-16 years old, and stated he has viewed child pornography and that they would be on his cellphone, laptop, and an external hard drive.

Egbert also admitted to seeing child pornography on multiple platforms such as Twitter, Discord, and Telegram, and stated he stumbled upon it on Twitter. He also admitted getting numerous files from a website which he stated has been shut down.

Egbert admitted to paying for child pornography about 30-40 times, and that he would pay through CashApp or send Amazon gift cards.

As a result of the search warrant, five electronic devices were seized from Egbert’s residence for further forensic examinations, including two Western Digital hard drives, one McCann thumbdrive, one Acer laptop, and one Samsung cellphone.

The cellphone, thumbdrive, and laptop included indecent contact videos and images of children under the age of 18 years old.

Egbert faces charges on 21 counts of sexual abuse of children; and one count of criminal use of a communication facility.

He is in the Lehigh County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing June 28 at Lehigh County Central Court in Allentown.
