Local Roundup: Results from May 10

Panther Valley, Marian and Lehighton all recorded victories in both baseball and softball on Wednesday.

BASEBALL

Panther Vy.-Mahanoy Area

Cody Orsulak tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight as Panther Valley rolled to a 13-1 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

Orsulak allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the first and then blanked the Bears over the remaining five innings of the mercy rule victory.

Meanwhile, the Panther offense banged out 12 hits and scored in every inning. Leading the way offensively was Tyler Black who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Also having big games for Panther Valley were Chase Weaver (two hits, one run, three RBIs); Brody Breiner (two hits, two runs, two RBIs); Hayden Goida, (two hits, two runs, two RBIs); Brad Hood (double, three RBIs) and Drew Kokinda (single, two runs).

The victory improves the Panthers’ record to 18-1 overall and 12-1 in the league. Mahanoy Area falls to 2-16 overall and 1-12 in league play.

Shenandoah-Marian

Brian Hinkle tossed shutout ball into the sixth inning as Marian defeated Shenandoah Valley, 9-1, in Schuylkill League action.

Hinkle allowed just three hits and no runs in five-and-a-third innings, striking out seven.

Joey Walko went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Colts offensively. Chase Petrilyak added a double, a triple, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Michael Gelatko had a double, two runs scored, and a pair of RBIs. Also contributing were Hinkle (single, two runs scored) and Jake Bobish (single, run scored, RBI, stolen base).

Marian improves to 10-8 overall and 6-6 in league play. Shenandoah falls to 9-9 overall and 6-7 in the league.

Pen Argyl-Lehighton

Lehighton exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Pen Argyl, 9-1, in a non-league game.

Ian Rarick had two hits, a run scored, and three RBIs to lead the Indian attack, while Brady O’Donnell added two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Aiden Rarick, Austin Greene and Adam Bastone all chipped in a hit, a run scored, and an RBI.

The Indians finish the regular season with a 13-7 record. Pen Argyl ends its season at 7-13.

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

Pottsville routed Jim Thorpe, 17-1, in a Schuylkill League game.

Luke Keitsock had three hits and five RBIs, while Wyatt Selinko had three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Crimson Tide.

For Jim Thorpe, Rich Strack had a double and knocked in his team’s only run.

Jim Thorpe ends it season with a 6-14 overall record and a 3-9 Schuylkill League mark. Pottsville improves to 2-17 overall and 2-10 in the league.

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua

Luke Kane’s three-run homer in the seventh inning was too little, too late as Tamaqua suffered a 10-7 Schuylkill League setback at the hands of league-leader Blue Mountain.

Kane led the way for the Blue Raiders (8-8 overall; 5-7 league) with a single, a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Wyatt Steigerwalt (two singles, two runs scored), and Lucas Kamant (single, double, run scored) also had solid offensive games.

For Blue Mountain (14-4, 11-1), Andrew Rautzhan belted a home run, scored twice, and knocked in three runs.

SOFTBALL

Mahanoy Area-Panther Vy.

Morgan Orsulak’s five-inning no-hitter led Panther Valley to a 13-1 Schuylkill League win over Mahanoy Area.

Orsulak, who struck out nine, also contributed with her bat as she recorded two singles and also connected for a three-run home run in the fifth inning.

Mikayla Yuricheck also homered for the Panthers, while Morgan O’Brien (single, triple, RBI) and Brenna McAndrew (single, triple, two RBIs) delivered big games as well.

Panther Valley moves to 7-12 overall and 4-9 in league play. Mahanoy Area falls to 2-16 overall and 1-12 in the league.

Shenandoah-Marian

Morgan Kelly’s two home run, eight-RBI day highlighted Marian’s 16-1 Schuylkill League rout of Shenandoah Valley.

Kelly went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a three-run home run in the third inning, and a game-ending grand slam in the fourth inning. She also doubled, tripled and scored three times.

Kelly not only starred at the plate, but she also tossed a two-hitter from the circle and struck out six.

Malina Letcher (two singles, triple, two runs scored, RBI); Anna Grabosky (two triples, three runs scored, RBI); and Julia Meiss (two singles, run scored, RBI) also had big offensive games for the Fillies

Marian improves to 15-5 overall and 9-4 in the league, while Shenandoah slips to 2-16 overall and 2-11 in league play.

Lehighton-Lourdes

Abbie Miller scattered seven hits and struck out 11 as Lehighton rolled to an 8-2 Schuylkill League victory over Lourdes Regional.

Miller got plenty of offensive support as eight of the nine batters in the Indians’ starting lineup had at least one hit. Leading the way was Anna Laible with two hits and three runs scored. Miller helped her own cause with two hits and an RBI, and Addison Chavanic added a single, a run scored and two RBIs. Makayla Gaston (single, two RBIs) and Amy Dwojewski (single, run scored, RBI) also contributed to the attack.

Lehighton improves to 8-11 overall and 5-9 in league play. Lourdes falls to 4-10 in the Schuylkill League.

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

Pottville rolled to a 19-3 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Ava Bowers paced the Tide (11-8, 9-5) with a single, double, home run, four runs scored, and two RBIs.

For the Olympians (2-17 overall; 0-14 league), Amanda Goodchild was a perfect 3-for-3 with a single, double, home run, two runs scored and an RBI, while Hannah Zacharias chipped in a pair of hits.

Weatherly-Minersville

Host Minersville rallied for a wild, 21-20, Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

A 12-run second inning gave the Wreckers what looked like a comfortable lead, but the Battlin’ Miners gradually worked their way back into the game before pulling it out when Emily Hart scored on a wild pitch to cap a three-run seventh inning rally.

Kelly Michaels had a big bat for the Wreckers (11-6 overall, 7-6 league) as she finished with three singles, a triple, two runs scored and six RBIs.

Raynessa Paulino-Diaz (three singles, a double and two RBIs); Madisyn vonFrisch (two singles, double, run scored, four RBIs), Anastasia Bloom (two singles, home run, two runs scored, two RBIs) and Adrianna Dotzel (two singles, a double, four runs scored, two RBIs) also had huge offensive games.

Hart led the way for the Battlin’ Miners (12-8, 10-3) with a single, double, home run, four runs scored and four RBIs.

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua

A late-inning surge helped Blue Mountain pull out a 10-4 Schuylkill League win over Tamaqua.

After Blue Raiders’ pitcher Emily Bumbulsky kept the Eagles scoreless for the first three innings, the visitors erupted to score 10 times over their next three at-bats.

Tamaqua (6-13 overall,4-10 league) tried to keep pace, scoring a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn’t match Blue Mountain’s firepower. In the Raider fifth, Hailey Williams’ sacrifice bunt scored Chloe Brown, and Addison Krall fielders choice ground ball scored Kailey Richards.

In the sixth, Richards had an RBI-single and Williams added an RBI-double.

Amanda Laughlin (three singles, a run scored) and Marissa Hablett (two singles, a double, two runs scored, two RBIs) led the way for the Eagles, who improved to 16-3 overall and 13-1 in the league.
