Ross Twp. discusses more security at park

Ross Township supervisors are looking into enhancing security at the township park.

“Damage was done to two of the picnic tables and pieces of one were thrown into the pond,” said Chairman James Zahoroiko during the supervisors meeting on Monday.

These are heavy wood tables, which would require a lot of force to break and strength to lift, he said. The incident happened sometime around the Easter weekend.

Zahoroiko, vice chairman David Shay, and supervisor Randy Detrick discussed options, such as security officers on the weekend, cameras, solar lights and getting a gate for the Kunkletown Road entrance to the park. The other entrance is by the municipal building on Anchorage Road.

Township Road Foreman Ethan Brewer told the supervisors that he and his crew moved all the tables from the lower part of the park and brought them up near the municipal building.

The township supervisors and staff will get prices and more information to share at next month’s meeting.

In the upcoming week, Brewer and his crew will remove the piles of anti-skid that was outside the annex building for residents to take as needed. They will put mulch in there for the spring and summer.

The mulch is free, and residents are to bring their own 5-pound bucket or two. The mulch is available 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Residents can help themselves.

During the public comment time, Martha Rezeli, secretary of the Ross Township Historical Society, announced the museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. The museum is on the top floor of the township annex building on Anchorage Road.

The museum is open the first Saturday of each month, and it is free. This month features music from across the ages.

“We’re excited for Saturday. We have kind of been laughing at some of the music. We have songs ranging from Lawrence Welk to Woodstock, from gramophones to iPhones,” she said.

They have a gramophone, record player, 33s, 45s, 78s, cassette tapes, CDs and 8 tracks.

Last weekend, they had a crowd of 50 people at the museum for a presentation and book signing event, she said.

“It was well received. It was so crowded that I stood in the hallway to watch and listen to the guest speakers,” she said.

Authors Michael Mancuso and Eric J. Kerchner wrote “Etna: A Murder Out of Time,” which is based on a story about Etna Bittenbender. The murdered township resident’s case remains cold.

The supervisors also discussed upcoming events.

The Veteran’s Memorial Dedication, which was in the works for Memorial Day, has been postponed until Veteran’s Day, Zahoroiko announced. It was at the request of the park committee, and the township will help with the preparations.

Brewer said the township clean up days are proposed for Sept. 22 and 23. He is awaiting a response regarding the availability of the dumpsters for that weekend.

Community Day is scheduled for Sept. 16. It will feature craft and retail vendors, local organizations, emergency apparatus, entertainment and refreshments.
